Hawks drop another game

The Atlanta Hawks (1-3) were outgunned again on Monday to fall to their third loss in the opening four games of the NBA season. Following defeats to Toronto and OKC, Atlanta went down this time to the Bulls, who won out 128-123 and became the second team already this season to put up more than 125 points against this struggling Hawks defense. Opposing teams are shooting 50.7% from the field against Atlanta so far this year, the fourth-worst mark in the NBA, while it ranks 22nd in the league by allowing 122.7 ppg so far.

Atlanta did get big games from Trae Young and Kristaps Porzingis in that latest setback. Young racked up 21 points and 17 assists in 34 minutes of court time,  setting a new league high for assists so far this season. Porzingis chipped in with 27 points at center, shooting a team-best 11-17 from the field and 3-6 from deep. Jalen Johnson also shone with 25 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and if the Hawks can tighten up in the backcourt, there is reason to think Young will have the support he needs to spark the offense. Last year, Atlanta went 40-42 and finished second in the Southeast Division before losing both its games in the Play-in tournament and crashing out of the postseason. Young led all NBA players with 11.4 assists per game and averaged 24.2 ppg, the highest of any Hawk in 2024-25.

For Wednesday's game, the Hawks are waiting on Jalen Johnson and Zaccharie Risacher, who are both struggling with ankle issues and will be gametime decisions against the Nets.

Nets still seeking first win

It has been a rough start for the Brooklyn Nets (0-4), one of only three teams in the NBA that are still looking for their first win this season, alongside the Pacers and Pelicans. The Nets have slumped straight to the bottom of the Eastern Conference after getting bested by the Hornets, Cavs, Spurs, and Rockets in quick succession. Three of those losses, including Monday's 137-109 blowout at the hands of Houston, have come by a margin of 10 points or higher, while three opponents out of four - the Cavs, Hornets, and Rockets - have put up more than 130 points against Brooklyn already this year.

Cam Thomas has at least given Nets fans something to get excited about in this otherwise dismal opening. The shooting guard put up 33 points and 11 assists against Cleveland and followed that up with a 40-point haul against the in-form, unbeaten Spurs. Thomas was quiet in the Houston loss but still averages a team-high 24.5 ppg through the opening four, shooting 41.8% from the field and 33.3% from deep. It is a welcome return for the player, who played just 25 games last season due to injury problems. The Nets finished 12th overall last year in the Eastern Conference and failed to qualify for the postseason for the second season in a row.

On the injury front, Haywood Highsmith (knee) is out until mid-December. Egor Demin (foot) and Ziaire Williams (back) are marked as questionable against the Hawks.

Hawks vs. Nets Pick

Hawks vs. Nets Spread Pick

  • Atlanta Hawks to cover (5 Units)

The Nets have been awful to start the season and Atlanta has a great opportunity here to get its own campaign back on track. The Hawks have been strong in the paint so far with 53.5 points per game up close, an area they can exploit against a Nets defense allowing 55.5 points in the paint per game (23rd in NBA). Opposing offenses have a league-high 63.9% effective FG% against Brooklyn and are dominating them from deep too, with the Nets giving up 15.5 successful 3-pointers on average (29th in pro basketball). Atlanta misses a lot of shots but should have plenty of opportunities to pull away here and cover, with the Nets 1-3 ATS in 2024-25. The Hawks took two of three against Brooklyn last season, winning the most recent game at the Barclays Center by 24 points.

Take the Hawks.

Hawks vs. Nets Over/Under Pick

  • Over (5 Units)

These are two of the weakest defenses in all of the NBA and that should ensure a big score on Wednesday, making the over the smart bet. The Nets rank 30th in the league with a 131.2 defensive while Atlanta comes in at 25th with a rating of 118.1. The Hawks love to move the ball around quickly and placed second in the NBA last year with an average of 106.5 possessions per game. They finished the regular season 50-31-1 on the over in 2024-25. The Nets are 3-1 on the over so far this season, and their mark of 130.5 points allowed per game is the highest in pro basketball.

Take the over.
