Hawks Cruise Past Pacers
The Atlanta Hawks are looking to make their first playoff run since 2022-23, and they’re off to a decent start under Coach Quin Snyder this season. Atlanta is 3-3, and they’ve won two consecutive games against Brooklyn (117-112) and Indiana (128-108), more recently. From a sports betting perspective, the Hawks are 2-4 ATS, and they’ve split their totals 3-3 to the over/under. As for the season-long outlook, Atlanta is a -310 favorite to snap its two-year drought and make the playoffs.
The Hawks are coming off a 20-point blowout road win over the Pacers on Friday, and this was a game where they closed as 2.5-point favorites. Statistically, Atlanta held edges in all major categories, including field goal rate (54.3% to 35.4%), three-point shooting (33.3% to 27.7%), turnovers (10 to 12), and rebounding (55 to 49). Individually, Jalen Johnson paved the way with a double-double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Star guard Trae Young (knee) missed Friday’s game and is expected to miss significant time.
- The Hawks are scoring 116.2 points per game, which is the 18th-most in the NBA.
- They own a field goal rate of 47.3% (15th), while cashing 34.3% of their triples (20th).
- Atlanta’s defense is 13th in efficiency, allowing 112.0 points per 100 possessions.

Cavaliers Drop Second Straight Game
Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers are coming off a dominant 2024-25 season where they went 64-18. Coach Kenny Atkinson won Coach of the Year honors, while Evan Mobley was named Defensive Player of the Year. The Cavs were bounced in the second round of the playoffs. As for the new campaign, Cleveland is a modest 3-3 out of the gate. They entered on a two-game losing streak, dropping games to Boston (125-105) and Toronto (112-101), more recently. The Cavs are a massive -20000 favorite to make the playoffs, while sitting at +750 to win the NBA title.
Friday’s 112-101 home loss to the Raptors was an NBA Cup Group Play game, and the Cavaliers (-4.5) did not cover in the outright defeat. The aforementioned Mobley paved the way in the loss, dropping 29 points while securing a team-leading eight rebounds. From the team level, Cleveland won the turnover battle (14 to 18), while Toronto held edges in field goal rate (48.8% to 40.0%), three-point shooting (43.3% to 30.4%), and rebounding (48 to 42).
- Cleveland is averaging 113.7 points per game, which is the 23rd-most in the Association.
- The Cavs are currently ranked 22nd in field goal rate (45.1%) and 17th in three-point shooting (34.9%).
- Defensively, they are 11th in efficiency, conceding 110.4 points per 100 possessions.
- Injury Report: G Donovan Mitchell (hamstring) and C Jarrett Allen (finger) both missed Friday’s game. Both are considered questionable for this week. G Darius Garland (toe) and G Max Strus (foot) are still dealing with long-term injuries. Garland was recalled last week, so a return this week is possible.
Hawks vs. Cavaliers Pick
Spread Pick for Hawks vs. Cavaliers
- Atlanta Hawks To Cover (5 units)
Both of these teams are dealing with some early-season injuries, but the difference is that the Hawks have been able to prevail through the early adversity. They’ve won back-to-back games, and I’m going to play them to cover the spread on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Cavaliers simply aren’t firing on all cylinders like we saw all throughout last season. Cleveland is outside of the top-10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency, and they’re also ranked just 17th in three-point shooting (34.9%). Being that the Cavs are working through some issues, I’m willing to fade them in the early parts of the season. They’re just 1-7 ATS in their last eight games. Give me the Hawks.
Over/Under Pick for Hawks vs. Cavaliers
- Over (5 units)
I’ll take the under in this game. For starters, Cleveland has seen the under cash at an 80% rate across its last five games. Their defense is still a top-10 unit in terms of points per game, giving up only 114.7 PPG (ninth).
Furthermore, neither team has been extremely fast out of the gate. Both teams are using a modest 104.8 possessions per game, which is tied for 17th. Factor in that some of the stars (Trae Young, Donovan Mitchell) are dealing with injuries, and I think it’s a good time to buy back and play the under.
