Celtics vs Warriors Game Preview and Analysis
Boston
Boston was rolling into the All-Star break. A 6-1 straight-up run is strong, but what I like most is how consistent the Celtics have been in games that turn into half-court possessions. This team plays at the slowest pace in the league, and that matters a lot after a long break when rhythm can be shaky.
Boston’s offense is built around the three-point line. That is great when the legs are fresh, but I always get cautious when a team that relies on jump shooting comes out of a week-long layoff. Even if the Celtics win, it is easy to see them winning with defense and control instead of a full offensive explosion.
Warriors
Golden State has been one of the toughest teams in the league to trust lately. They have been bouncing back and forth between wins and losses, and they have not had a three-game winning or losing streak since mid-January.
That said, I do not hate the spot. Steph Curry is still out, but Kristaps Porzingis may make his Warriors debut after practicing Wednesday. He has not played since January 7 when he was with the Hawks, so I am not expecting a huge minutes load, but his presence matters for spacing, rim protection, and half-court stability.
This is also the kind of matchup where Golden State’s veteran core usually shows up. I would rather take points with the Warriors at home than lay a big number with a road favorite coming out of the break.
Celtics vs Warriors Handicap Breakdown
From a betting standpoint, this is a pace game first. Boston wants it slow. Golden State is fine playing slower too, especially without Curry. That is why I keep coming back to the under.
The spread has also moved up, which tells me the market is leaning Boston. I get it. The Celtics were hot going into the break, and the Warriors are still dealing with lineup changes. But the number is now up to Celtics -5.5, and I would rather take the points with Golden State in a spot where Boston could start a little flat from three.
Betting Trends for BOS and GS
- Boston is 6-1 straight-up in its last seven games before the All-Star break.
- Boston is 5-2 against the spread in its last seven games before the All-Star break.
- Boston is 4-6 against the spread in its last 10 games as a favorite.
- Nine of Boston’s last 10 games stayed under the total.
- Golden State has not had a three-game winning streak or losing streak since mid-January.
- Boston and Golden State have split their season series 1-1 in each of the last three years.
Key Injuries and Notes for BOS and GS
- Jayson Tatum is working back from an Achilles injury and it is unclear if he will return before the end of the regular season, but signs point to him being ready for the playoffs.
- Steph Curry remains out of the lineup for Golden State.
- Kristaps Porzingis may make his Warriors debut after practicing Wednesday.
- Porzingis has not played since January 7, when he was with the Hawks.
Final Score Prediction
I see Boston controlling the tempo and winning the game, but I also see Golden State doing enough to stay inside the number. The biggest reason is pace, and the second is that Boston’s three-point-heavy offense can be a little shaky coming out of a break.
Projected Final Score: Celtics 106, Warriors 103
