Hornets beat Jazz emphatically in Sunday's 126-103 win

The Charlotte Hornets entered Sunday with a 2-4 record, a three-game losing streak, and less than 24 hours removed from a 122-105 home loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. They responded by taking a Utah Jazz team they were 1.5-point favorites against on the spread and routing them 126-103.

If anything, the Hornets' win was even more decisive than the 23-point margin of victory would indicate. They outscored the Jazz 39-25 in the first quarter and 32-23 in the second, putting them up 71-48 at halftime. The Hornets shot 48.9% from the field and 41.9% from behind the arc, secured 46 rebounds to the Jazz's 38, and made each of their 22 free throw attempts. Miles Bridges led the team with 29 points, adding six assists and four rebounds. Rookie fourth-overall pick Kon Knueppel followed with 24 points, hitting 52.9% of his shots from the field while tacking on five assists and six rebounds of his own.

LaMelo Ball, who leads the team in points (23.3) and assists (9.8) per game, was sidelined on Sunday with an ankle injury. He's considered day-to-day and is designated as questionable for Tuesday's game against the Pelicans. Grant Williams (knee) and Josh Green (shoulder) are out as they continue to recover from offseason surgeries, while Brandon Miller (shoulder) remains out after his more recent injury.

Pelicans still looking for first win

The New Orleans Pelicans aren't the last remaining winless team in the NBA, but they're two games back of everyone else in the Western Conference at 0-6. They've been close in a couple of games, but their 137-106 loss in Oklahoma City on Sunday wasn't one of them.

It was what you'd expect from a meeting between a winless team and an undefeated one–the Thunder rose to 7-0 after the win, in which they outscored the Pelicans 39-22 in the first quarter. The Thunder were allowed to shoot 56.0% from the field, committed fewer turnovers, and secured more rebounds. Zion Williamson led the team in points (20), assists (6), and rebounds (9), shooting 7-14 from the field and 6-12 from the free throw line. He leads the team this season in points (22.8) and assists (4.6) per game, in addition to field goal percentage (48.7%) and steals (2.0). Jordan Poole, who trails only Williamson on the team in points per game (18.3), had an off game with only 11 points after shooting 18.2% from the field. He'd scored 30 days ago against the Clippers, when he hit 9-15 (60.0%) from the field and 7-13 (53.8%) from behind the arc.

Williamson leads the injury report with a questionable designation for Tuesday's game–he's day-to-day with a hamstring issue, days after missing the team's 122-90 loss to the Celtics with a bone contusion. Yves Missi (illness) is also questionable; Dejounte Murray remains out as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon last season.

Hornets vs. Pelicans Pick

Spread Pick for Hornets vs. Pelicans

  • Hornets +1.5 (-102) (4 Units)

With Ball and Williamson having availability questions ahead of this game, there's plenty of room for variance depending on whether one or both are on the court. Those two aside, the Hornets have shown a greater ability to compete with the players they currently have in the lineup–just ask the Jazz. The Pelicans have gotten the better of this matchup in recent years–they're 5-1 in their last six meetings with the Hornets, dating back to 2022–but I wouldn't take this iteration of the team as favorites against anybody.

Over/Under Pick for Hornets vs. Pelicans

  • Under 234.5 (-110) (4 Units)

The Hornets are among the faster-playing teams in the NBA in terms of team possessions per game (103.1), but they'll be visiting an opponent in the bottom third (99.3). The Team Total Under is 3-0 in the Hornets' last three games, hitting against the Magic (123-107, under 239.5), the Timberwolves (122-105, under 235.5), and the Jazz (126-103, under 233.0). New Orleans ranks last in points per game (107.7), second-to-last in field goal percentage per game (42.1%), and among the bottom half of the league in field goal attempts per game (87.8). The Pelicans scored 90 points without Williamson against the Celtics and a season-low 88 in his first game back; if Williamson isn't a full go here, it'll be that much harder for the Pels to find points.
