Hornets stay consistent with season openers
For the fifth straight season, the Hornets were winners on opening night as the offense got right to work, scoring 77 first-half points. They shot 59.1% over the first 24 minutes and had a 17-point halftime lead. Charlotte’s offense shot 53.3% from the field and 47.2% from three-point range, hitting 17 long-range shots in the win. All five starters and four bench players scored in double digits. The Hornets’ reserves provided 52 points to the effort. Brandon Miller scored 17 of his team-high 25 points in the first half. The third-year forward shot 8-19 from the field and 7-10 from the free-throw line. LaMelo Ball knocked down four threes in eight attempts and added a team-best eight assists.
The defense clamped down late, keeping the Nets to just 20 points over the final quarter of play. Charlotte held their opponents to 44.3% shooting from the field, but also allowed them to knock down 14 threes. They had five blocks and six steals, but both teams turned the ball over 17 times. The Hornets won the battle of the boards, 50-38. Miles Bridges pulled down 11 rebounds as part of a double-double that included 18 points. Ryan Kalkbrenner also grabbed 11 boards and blocked a team-high two blocks.
Team notes
- In 21 minutes off the bench, Moussa Diabate had 13 points, 9 rebounds, a steal and a block.
- First round pick Kon Knueppel shot 4-6 from the field and 3-4 from three-point range to score 11 points in his debut, complemented by 5 rebounds and an assist.
- Key bench pieces Grant Williams (knee) and Jalen Green (shoulder) both missed the season opener and are questionable for this matchup.
76ers show resolve in comeback effort
Following an 18-point effort in the third quarter of their game on Wednesday night, things were not looking good for the 76ers as they trailed by 11 points going into the final quarter. Then the offense exploded, shooting 59.1% and scoring 42 points, punctuated by a pair of free throws from rookie VJ Edgecombe with 14 seconds remaining. Philadelphia shot 45.9% from the field in the win, hitting 16 threes. Edgecombe dropped 34 points, the most points in an NBA debut since 1959. Tyrese Maxey scored 15 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter comeback. Overall, the guard shot 13-24 with seven threes, adding 6 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block. Four players scored in double digits for the Sixers, but the bench added only 16 points to the effort.

The Philadelphia defense was actually in control of things in the first half of Wednesday’s game as they held Boston to 51 points while grabbing a six-point halftime lead. They held the Celtics to 45.1% shooting from the field and 25.6% from beyond the arc. The Sixers lost the rebound battle, 42-40, but they turned nine Boston turnovers into 17 points. In just his fifth career start, Dominic Barlow grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and had a block to go along with 13 points and five assists.
Team notes
- Joel Embiid played only 20 minutes in the opener and shot 1-9 from the field for four points.
- Paul George (knee) did not play in the season opener and will be a game-time decision for this matchup.
- The team went 7-10 from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s win.
Hornets vs. 76ers Picks
Spread Pick for Hornets vs. 76ers
- Hornets to cover (5 units)
In four meetings between these teams last season, the 76ers went 4-0 SU but 2-2 ATS. The Hornets are a young group that’s been building up over the past few years, and if Wednesday is any indicator, they have taken a big step forward. They were up against a bad Nets team, so that has to be taken into consideration, but Charlotte’s ability to work the ball around was impressive. Maxey and Edgecombe took over the offense for Philly. I can’t imagine that Edgecombe goes for another 30-something or knocks down 13 field goals for a second straight game. Though we can expect Embiid to hit more than one shot. However, they don’t have enough scorers to enjoy a big enough advantage against them. Charlotte is 4-3 ATS in their last seven games versus Philly.
Take the Hornets.
Over/Under Pick for Hornets vs. 76ers
- Over (4 units)
In their four meetings last season, the two combined to average 215.3 points per game as the games split against the total, 2-2. The Hornets were very impressive in their opener, with four players scoring 15 points or more and nine scoring at least 10 points. They were able to find the right shot and should be able to again, against a defense that allowed 91 field goal attempts on Wednesday. On defense, Charlotte seems willing to let their opponent run with them. Brooklyn was unable to do that, but a healthy Philadelphia team should. Both teams hit the over in their season openers.
Take the over.
