Cavaliers bounce back in Big Apple

The Cavaliers spent the first two games of their season making the rounds in New York City. After losing to the Knicks by eight on Wednesday, they rebounded in Brooklyn behind an offensive effort that saw them score 29 points in each of the first three quarters. Cleveland shot 53.7% in their win, and through two games, the team shot 50% from the field with an average of 18.5 three-pointers. They are 14th in the league with a 1.66 assist-to-turnover ratio, and the Cavs' bench averaged 30.5 points per game. Donovan Mitchell led the team with 35 points on Friday, his second straight 30+ point effort. The guard was shooting 50% heading into Sunday’s action. Lonzo Ball averaged 23 minutes off the bench in the first two games and was leading the club with seven assists a night.

On defense, the Cavaliers have allowed their opponents to score 121.5 points per game, 23rd in the league, and shoot 47.3% from the field. They’ve allowed 16.5 threes a game, and teams are grabbing 44.3 rebounds, compared to their 34 boards per game. Cleveland’s defense is averaging 11 steals and 4.5 blocks, which has led to 16 turnovers from their opponents each game. Through two games, Evan Mobley was averaging eight rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. Mitchell was leading the club with 2.5 steals a night.

Team notes

  • In their first two games, Cleveland averaged 41 points in the third quarter but only 23.5 in the fourth.
  • Forward De’Andre Hunter, who has yet to play this season due to a knee injury, was questionable for the team’s game on Sunday.
  • Guards Darius Garland (toe) and Max Strus (foot) remain out until at least the end of the month.

Pistons get engine revved

Like their Monday night opponent, the Pistons also spent the first two games of their season on the road before opening up their home digs on Sunday. In Friday’s win over Houston, they led 63-56 at halftime and held on late. They shot just 46.7% in the win and hit 16 threes. This year, Detroit’s offense has been shooting 45.5% from the field while averaging 11.5 threes per game. They ranked third in the league with a 1.96 assist-to-turnover ratio and turned the ball over 13.5 times a night. Cade Cunningham scored 23 on opening night and 21 in Friday’s win, despite shooting 37.5% from the field. After two games, the forward led the team with 22 points and 9.5 assists per game. Ronald Holland II was shooting 52.9% and averaging 15 points per game off the bench, the second-highest average on the team.

Defensively, the Pistons allowed an average of 113 points, seventh in the league, and opponents were shooting 41.8% from the field with 10.5 threes against them. They’ve been slightly outrebounded, 47.5-47 per game. Detroit has coaxed 15 turnovers a day from its foes by way of seven steals and 10.5 blocks per game. Five players averaged over five rebounds in the first two games, with Tobias Harris leading the pack with 8.5 rebounds per game. Isaiah Stewart has come off the bench to average three blocks per game to go with his 12 points a night.

Team notes

  • Through two games, Thompson was shooting 58.3% from the field.
  • Guard Jaden Ivey is out until late November.
  • Center Jalen Duran was ejected from Friday’s game after getting into it with Houston’s Amen Thompson.

Cavaliers vs. Pistons Picks

Spread Pick for Cavaliers vs. Pistons

  • Detroit +1.5 (5 units)

The Cavaliers won three of four meetings straight up between the two teams last season. The Cavs come into this matchup, as they have all season, banged up. They’ve been without two starters and will be without at least one of them in this one, as well as a meaningful depth piece. Their win on Friday came against a bad Nets team, and even then, they won by just five points. On top of that, they have to play Milwaukee as home on Sunday and then travel to Detroit following a 6:00 EST game. The Pistons also play on Sunday, but at 2:00 EST and at home, so they’ll be sitting back resting before the Cavs even suit up on Sunday. Cunningham has turned into a solid leader for this young Pistons core and at home, he’ll put them on his back if he has to. Detroit is 2-0 ATS in the last two games between the teams and they won their last meeting by 11 points at home.

Take the Pistons to cover.

Over/Under Pick for Cavaliers vs. Pistons

  • Under 228.5 (4 units)

In four games between the division rivals last season, they averaged a combined 225.8 points per game. The Cleveland offense had a tough season opener, but they bounced back on Friday with a 131-point effort. The Cavs have plenty of guys who are unafraid to put up the three, so they can light things up in a hurry. They’ve also been ninth in the league in pace through two games, per DunksandThrees.com, averaging 105 possessions per 48 minutes. Detroit is 15th in pace, averaging 102.5 possessions per 48 minutes. They are shooting the ball okay enough and were able to find the right long-range shots in their latest effort. The under is 8-2 in the last ten games between the teams.

Take the under.
