Butler Shines in Warriors W
Golden State will take on the Trail Blazers on the road after recording a win in their opener on Tuesday evening. Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 to lead aging Warriors team.. Jonathan Kuminga scored 17 points as the Warriors endured a 43-point effort from Luka Doncic.
- Golden State opened the second half with a 19-4 run to open a lead that grew to 17 points. Los Angeles cut the lead to five before the Warriors closed it out.
- Butler made all 16 of his free throws, and Curry hit a 3-pointer in the final minute for his first points of the fourth quarter. Butler almost matched the Lakers' total in made free throws en route to a team-high 31 points. His efficient scoring also marked his career high for a regular-season opener.
- He tied Stephen Curry for the team lead in shot attempts and was one of four Warriors to score at least 17 points.
- Draymond Green scored only eight points and got an early technical foul while sitting on the bench, but that is not surprising. He did make a critical three-pointer down the stretch to thwart a Lakers surge.
Blazers Falter Down the Stretch
After building an early lead throughout the first three quarters, the young Trail Blazers struggled to close out the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 118-114 loss. Jerami Grant led the Blazers with 29 points.

- Damian Lillard returned to the Blazers in the offseason and got a standing ovation from the fans at Moda Center when he was introduced before the game. Lillard has an Achilles injury and will not play this season.
- Portland was also playing without guard Scoot Henderson, who was sidelined for the start of the season with a left hamstring tear. They held the lead until midway through the fourth quarter before the more experienced Timberwolves took control.
- Grant started the game on the bench, as Portland is attempting to trot out a younger lineup.
Grant's age doesn't fit well with Portland's rebuild. Grant's season-ending knee injury allowed Deni Avdija and Toumani Camara to assume starting roles in the offense, so the veteran will begin the season as the odd man out. He played great on Wednesday, but the result will be different from what you would expect. Portland wants to trade Grant, and games like this will generate a lot more in return for the veteran.
*Head coach Chauncey Billups was arrested in a gambling-related case and was placed on immediate leave by the NBA on Thursday morning. Tiago Splitter was named interim head coach, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
Golden State Warriors vs. Portland Trail Blazers Game Pick
Spread Pick for Warriors vs. Trail Blazers
- Golden State Warriors ATS (5 units)
The Trail Blazers may be without their head coach for this game against the Warriors. As of this writing, the FBI has arrested Billups for illegal gambling, which creates a lot of dysfunction in Portland. This is unsettling news, especially for handicapping purposes, and it makes it impossible to trust the Trail Blazers in this spot. Portland is without a valid point guard, and they turn it over a ton. Last year, they were next to last in turnover percentage, and they will be without Scoot Henderson again. Take the Warriors to win and cover.
OVER/UNDER PICK for Warriors vs. Blazers
- OVER (4 units)
The Warriors and Blazers were in the middle of the pack with respect to pace of play last year. Since we only have one game of action to go on, it remains to be seen the style both teams deploy early in the year. But the Blazers are far better suited on the glass this year, and that will lead to plenty of second-chance buckets and easy opportunities. Last year, both the Warriors and Trail Blazers were top five in offensive rebounding percentage. Portland is better defensively but they were still 16th in defensive rating. Take the over.
