Hawks playing well without Young
Hawks won three of four games before facing Philly on Sunday night. They've been playing about as well as you could expect without All-Star guard Trae Young (knee), who is out another two weeks before he gets re-evaluated. Of course, when you have Kristaps Porzingis (illness), if he plays 60 games, that's a positive. He missed Sunday's game with an illness.
On Friday, Atlanta defeated Cleveland at home 130-123 as a 6.5-point home dog. Porzingis missed that game as well, but Jalen Johnson stepped up with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists, while Nickeil-Alexander Walker added 30 points. Johnson has made big strides in his fifth season, averaging 21.9 points and 9.6 rebounds. Onyeka Okongwu, a 6-10, 240-pound center, has also taken his game to another level with 16.5 points and 7.1 rebounds, while shooting 41.3% from 3-point range.
The Hawks are shooting 48.9% from the field (5th) and 37.2% from long range (9th). Their biggest problem is on the boards, where they are 26th in total rebounding rate at 48%.

Pistons finally fall back to earth
Detroit opened the season at 15-2 before losing to Boston on the road by three and Orlando at home by three, before edging Miami 138-135 on Saturday on the road as a 4-point dog. The Heat win on Saturday was an impressive one, coming off the home loss to the Magic the night before. Cade Cunningham scored 29 points and dished out eight assists (eight turnovers), shooting 14 of 25 from the field to lead the Pistons to the victory. Tobias Harris added 26 points on 10-of-12 shooting. The Pistons shot an outstanding 59% from the field nd 42% from long range (11-26).
Young teams need a veteran presence and that's what the Pistons have with Harris and Duncan Robinson, who scored 18 points in the win over Miami. He's averaging 12.6 points and is shooting 40.1% from long range. Cunnighan is having a monster season with 28.8 points per game, 9.4 assists and 6.4 rebounds, while shooting 45.6% from the field. Center Jalen Durent controls the paint with 19.5 points and 11.8 rebounds.

Spread Pick for Pistons vs. Hawks
Hawks vs. Pistons Pick and Prediction
- Detroit -9 (4 units)
Atlanta just played a tough game on Sunday night. They have no Trae Young and Porzingis is sick. Detroit is healthy aside from Robinson and they have a deep enough bench to cover them. Duren is a beast in the paint and he'll control the game against an undersized Hawks' team, who have played well enough to be over .500, but they aren't going far with their rebounding issues.
Total Pick for Hawks vs. Pistons
- Over 234 (4 units)
Atlanta loves to push the ball at a pace of eighth in the NBA, according to DunksandThrees.com. Detroit is 11th in pace so we're still going to see a high-scoring game, which in the NBA these days, means about 130-120. These teams have played three straight overs and seven of the last eight meetings. Detroit has gone over in five of their last games.
