Houston Rockets Off to a Perfect Start
Houston hasn't had to play from behind in the standings yet. The Rockets opened their schedule with an 18-point win over Dallas, then survived a closer game at San Antonio, winning 114-110. Atlanta was next, and the Hawks couldn't beat Houston in either meeting. The Rockets won 121-114 in Atlanta before returning home for Monday's 120-110 victory. Houston has scored at least 114 in every outing, and its defense hasn't allowed more than 114. That's a good combination heading into Wednesday's trip to Milwaukee.
Kevin Durant has looked comfortable in Houston's offense, scoring 24 points per game while making 56.1% of his shots. Alperen Sengun is right behind him at 23 points, adding nine rebounds and 6.3 assists. Amen Thompson has helped on the boards with 10.3 rebounds per outing. Fred VanVleet has averaged eight assists, giving the Rockets another player who can create scoring chances. Houston is shooting 50.2% from the field, with several players contributing rather than Durant having to carry every possession.
Injuries: Steven Adams is out. Marcus Smart is questionable.
Milwaukee Bucks Finally Get a Victory
Milwaukee had to wait until Monday to enjoy its first regular-season win. Indiana visited Fiserv Forum and left with a 110-102 defeat, ending the Bucks' three-game losing streak. Before that, Washington had beaten Milwaukee 128-116, Chicago won 132-125 and Philadelphia handed the Bucks a 127-116 loss. Those weren't particularly encouraging defensive performances. Milwaukee allowed at least 127 points in each defeat before holding Indiana to 102. Whether the Bucks can repeat that defensive effort against Houston is another question.
Tyler Herro has been Milwaukee's leading scorer, averaging 23.7 points and 5.3 assists. Jaime Jaquez Jr. has contributed 20.7 points while shooting 61.1% from the field. Kyle Kuzma has helped on the glass with nine rebounds per game. The Bucks are collecting 49 rebounds as a team, giving them an advantage in that department over Houston. Milwaukee also has Myles Turner protecting the basket, although the center is averaging just 7.7 points through his first three appearances.
Injuries: No injuries listed.
Key To The Game
Houston has scored at least 114 points in every game, and Milwaukee has struggled to keep opponents from getting good looks. The Rockets can attack through Durant on the perimeter or Sengun closer to the basket. Milwaukee needs Turner to make Sengun work for his points without leaving Durant too much room. Herro also has an important assignment against a Houston team allowing only 111 points per game. The Bucks have rebounded well, but getting stops after those defensive possessions will matter more.
Houston Rockets vs Milwaukee Bucks Game Pick
- Houston Rockets
Milwaukee's win over Indiana was encouraging, especially after three poor defensive outings. But Houston presents a tougher assignment than the Bucks faced Monday. Durant and Sengun have been producing consistently, and the Rockets haven't scored fewer than 114 points in a game. Milwaukee has enough offensive talent to remain competitive, particularly if Herro gets going early. The problem is whether the Bucks can slow Houston for four quarters. The Rockets have already won twice away from home, and I expect them to make it three with another strong offensive performance.
Houston Rockets vs Milwaukee Bucks Over/Under Pick
- Over
Milwaukee's first three games produced 244, 257 and 243 combined points. Monday's meeting with Indiana was much quieter, finishing with 212. Houston hasn't played quite as many high-scoring games, but the Rockets have reached 120 points in three of their four victories. Milwaukee can contribute through Herro and Jaquez, while Durant gives Houston a reliable option whenever the offense slows down. Both teams have been shooting well from the field, and the Bucks have allowed plenty of points outside Monday's victory. I'm expecting both offenses to reach triple figures comfortably, making the over my choice.
