Pacers fall short in Finals repeat
The Indiana Pacers (0-1) showed last season's run to the NBA Finals was no fluke in their opening game as they pushed the champion Thunder all the way. A thrilling matchup went to double overtime but was eventually won by OKC 141-135. Indiana is now back in action against Memphis and hopes to go one step further in 2025-26, after finishing last season 50-32 and taking the Thunder to seven games in the finals following playoff wins over the Bucks, Cavaliers and Knicks.

Pascal Siakam and Bennedict Mathurin both came up big in defeat on Wednesday with 30+ points and 10+ rebounds to keep the Pacers in the game. Siakam led Indiana in 2024-25 with 20.2 points per game and 6.9 rebounds, earning his third All-Star callup as a reserve as well as MVP honors in the Eastern Conference finals against the Knicks. As a team, the Pacers excelled in possession, ranking third in the NBA with 29.2 assists per game while giving up only 13.2 turnovers (tied-third with Cleveland). Their mark of 43.6 FGM/G placed fifth in the league.
Tyrese Halliburton was a big absence for Indiana to start the season and he will remain on the sidelines for the entire campaign due to the Achilles tendon tear he suffered in Game 7 of the Finals. PG T.J. McConnell (hamstring) and rookie Kam Jones (back) are also ruled out, while Indiana will wait on PG Andrew Nembhard's fitness after he left the Thunder game in the second half due to shoulder soreness.
Big second half leads Grizzlies to W
The Memphis Grizzlies (1-0 prior to Friday's game vs. Miami) took their time to get started in Wednesday's season opener, but eventually found their offensive stride. Memphis put up 72 points in the second half to beat out the Pelicans 128-122 at the FedEx Forum and begin the year with a win over a division rival as the team sets out to unseat Houston as Northwest champions. In 2024-25 the Grizzlies finished 48-34 in the regular season but their playoff journey proved a short one as they were blown away 4-0 in the first round by the Thunder.
Ja Morant stood out on Wednesday with 35 points in a game that showed off Memphis' roster depth, as seven different players ended in double figures on scoring. Morant shot 13-20 (65.7%) from the field and 2-6 from deep while sinking seven of his eight free-throw attempts. He led Memphis in 2024-25 with 20.3 ppg and 7.3 assists (tied-11th in NBA). The Grizzlies finished the last regular season with an offensive rating of 117.7 to rank sixth among NBA franchises.
There are plenty of injury concerns for Memphis to start the year. Brandon Clarke (knee), Zach Edey (ankle), Ty Jerome (calf), Scotty Pippen Jr. (toe), and Vince Williams Jr. (heel) were all ruled out of Friday's Heat game. Most worrying was Morant's appearance on the injury report with ankle soreness, the same affliction that left Kentavious Caldwell-Pope marked questionable ahead of that game.
Pacers vs. Grizzlies Pick
Pacers vs. Grizzlies Spread Pick
- Pacers to cover (5 Units)
I like the Pacers here. Indiana has the benefit of an extra day of rest, while the Grizzlies will have only 24 hours to get their already banged-up roster into shape following what will be a tough outing against the Heat on Friday. Memphis looked weak under the rim in its first match, giving up 17 offensive rebounds to New Orleans while snagging just six, and the likes of Siakam and Mathurin, who pulled down 26 boards between them against the Thunder - not to mention Isaiah Jackson, barely used in the opener - can take full advantage. The Pacers went 10-5 ATS last year when enjoying rest advantage.
Take the Pacers.
Pacers vs. Grizzlies Over/Under Pick
- Over (5 Units)
The over looks like the way to go on Saturday. Indiana and Memphis both ranked among the NBA's top offensive teams in 2024-25, with the Pacers averaging 117.4 ppg (seventh in NBA) and the Grizzlies 121.7 ppg (second in NBA). Memphis ranked first last year on pace of play, with 106.9 possessions per game, with Indiana also placing inside the top eight. Expect a fast, furious game with shots raining down from all over the court.
Take the over.
