Clippers Return With Title Hopes
Los Angeles earned the fifth seed (50-32) in the Western Conference last season and looked primed for a deep run. Unfortunately, they received a poor draw in the first round, getting eliminated by the Denver Nuggets.
- James Harden was an All-Star, and Kawhi Leonard remained healthy with his constantly ailing knee. As a result, the Clippers revamped around Leonard and Harden this summer, beginning with Harden signing a reported two-year deal.
- LA then traded Norman Powell in a three-team swap that brought John Collins in from the Jazz. To replace Powell in the backcourt, the front office signed three-time All-Star Bradley Beal after his buyout with Phoenix and brought back 12-time All-Star Chris Paul in free agency.
- Veteran big man Brook Lopez also joined the group, adding another floor-spacer alongside Collins in the frontcourt.
- Powell was the second leading scorer on the team and filled a critical void while Leonard missed the first 34 games.
- L.A. ranked third in defensive rating last season, but was 20th in scoring (112.9 ppg). It also finished 25th in 3-pointers made. The Clippers must replace Powellโs 21.8 ppg as well as his 179 3-pointers and impressive 41.8% 3-point shooting.
Jazz Seeking a Bounce Back Season
Utah had a disastrous season in 2024, failing to muster 20 wins in what was an openly tanking year. They were eliminated from the playoffs in early March.

- By the end of March, the Jazz recorded their 60th loss of the season to the Charlotte Hornets, which not only makes the 2024 season the worst season in franchise history, but it also ends the Jazz's record of being the only NBA team remaining to not lose 60 or more games in a season.
- They also failed to improve upon their 31โ51 record from the previous year, and finished with the worst record in the conference and the entire NBA at 17โ65.
- The offseason saw the departure of a few veteran fixtures in Utah over the past several years, including Jordan Clarkson, John Collins, and Collin Sexton.
- The Jazz replaced them with a new crop of vets to support their young core, bringing in Kyle Anderson, Georges Niang, and Josef Nurkic all via trades. These pieces will continue to support Lauri Markkanen, who was an All-Star last year after averaging 19.0 points and 5.9 rebounds across 47 games last season.
Los Angeles Clippers vs. Utah Jazz Game Pick
Spread Pick for Clippers vs. Jazz
- Los Angeles Clippers ATS (4 units)
Lauri Markkanen remains the focal point of Utah, and he has been the subject of significant trade discussions this offseason. In the draft, Utah opted to go with standout one-and-done forward Ace Bailey out of Rutgers with the 5th overall pick and traded up to No. 18 to snag Walter Clayton Jr., who helped lead Florida to the 2025 NCAA championship. The kids are outmatched against an elite defensive group. It is safe to say this will be another rebuild for the Jazz, and Markkanen could be on the move sooner rather than later. Harden and Leonard will be fresh and play at a high level, which will be difficult for the young Jazz to match. Utah was last in turnover rate last year, and they will cough it up a ton here. Take LA to cover.
OVER/UNDER PICK for Clippers vs. Jazz
- UNDER (5 units)
Los Angeles was 22nd in pace of play last season, and they enter this season with one of the oldest point guards in the NBA. Chris Paul used to be able to run the floor like a drill sergeant, but he has slowed down considerably at his age. Pair that with a methodical Leonard and James Harden, who loves to slow it down and analyze the defense, and this will be a low-scoring contest. Last season, Los Angeles led the NBA in defensive rebounding percentage, so second-chance points will be few and far between for the Jazz. Couple that with first-game jitters for both clubs, and this is an easy take. Go with the under here.
