Lakers playing through the pain
With a loss on Monday, the Lakers had their brief, two-game winning streak snapped and, in the process, showed the current state of affairs for a very depleted basketball team. Against Portland, they shot 46.5% from the field and scored 27 points or less in three of four quarters.
Luka Doncic, who has played in only two games, is expected to miss at least a week with a thumb injury and LeBron James (sciatica) isn’t expected to make his season debut until mid-November. With both down, Austin Reeves has stepped to the forefront for the offense, averaging 46 points in the last two games. The guard ranks third in the NBA with 34 points per game, is shooting 56.6% from the field and averages 11 free throws per game. The team is scoring 118 points per game, 15th in the league, and they are shooting 52% from the field. They average a league-low 8.8 threes per game, and their 1.34 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks 29th in the league.
On defense, L.A. is allowing 117.8 points per game, 14th in the league, and teams are shooting 46.2% from the field with 15.5 threes per game against them. On the boards, the Lakers average 41.5 rebounds a night. They’ve been able to force 15.8 turnovers per game from their opponents by way of 8.8 steals and 3.3 blocks per game. DeAndre Ayton is leading the team with 9.2 rebounds and one block per game to go with his 15.8 points. Jarred Vanderbilt is averaging a team-best two steals a night in mostly a reserve role.

Timberwolves trading results
The Timberwolves have alternated a win with a loss since the start of the season, with both of their wins coming by four points apiece. In their loss to Denver on Monday, they were outscored in the second half, 70-49, and scored just 20 points in the fourth quarter.
After averaging 36 points over the first two games, Anthony Edwards lasted just three minutes in the third game after going down with a hamstring strain. The TWolves star is going to miss at least two weeks. In the two games without him, Julius Randle averaged 27.5 points per game and went a combined 15-18 from the free-throw line. The 12th-year forward is averaging 25.3 points, 6.7 assists, and 6 steals per game. Minnesota’s offense as a whole is averaging 114 points per game, 22nd in the league. They are shooting 47.2% from the field and averaging 12 three-pointers each night. Their 1.38 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks 29th.
The TWolves defense is allowing 119.8 points per game, 19th in the league. Opponents are shooting 48.1% from the field and averaging 13 threes each night against them. Minnesota is cleaning 43 rebounds off the glass each night. In terms of turnovers, they are getting 13.3 from teams each time out, thanks to their 7.8 steals and 6.5 blocks per game. Rudy Gobert has pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds per game and scored 8.7 points. Jaden McDaniels is averaging 2.5 blocks a night and scoring 16 points per game.
Team notes
- Randle is shooting 63.4% on two-point attempts.
- They are committing 25 fouls per game, seventh most in the NBA.
- The TWolves average 32.8 points in the first quarter, the fifth-best average in the league.
- Jaylen Clark (calf) missed Monday’s game and is questionable for this matchup.
Lakers vs. Timberwolves Picks
Spread Pick for Lakers vs. Timberwolves
- Timberwolves -6.5 (5 units)
On paper, this was going to be a matchup of NBA superstars going at it, but instead, we are left with LeBron, Luke, or Ant-Man, truly a blow for ticket holders. For those of us at home, we can use this to our advantage. This is already the second meeting of the season between the two. The Lakers won the first meeting by 18 points, but also had Doncic drop 49 points and a triple-double. L.A. also shot 59.2% in that game, and we know that won’t happen here. Los Angeles is a much bigger mess. Not only are they missing two of the game’s biggest names, but their depth is depleted due to injuries as well. Heck, they needed Bronny James to put in 20 minutes on Monday, which is not a good sign at all for the club. Randle and Jaden McDaniels are more than apt at leading the Minnesota offense in the absence of Edwards. Reaves will not be enough for the Lakers to cover their losses here. Minnesota is 4-2 SU and ATS in the last six games between the two.
Take the Timberwolves giving the points at home.
Over/Under Pick for Lakers vs. Timberwolves
- Under 225.5 (5 units)
This matchup features a pair of offenses missing their top scorers. Los Angeles was hampered without Doncic in Monday’s loss, and even with Reeves putting in 41 points, they only scored 108 points. They simply do not have enough scorers at this point, and the bench is dry, scoring a combined 18 points versus Portland. Minnesota scored 114 points in each of their last two games, which is similar to what it did in the first two when they were full strength with Edwards in the lineup. Both sides sit in the bottom third of the league in three-point attempts per game, so they aren’t likely to start shooting the lights out on the scoreboard. Both teams also sit in the bottom half of the league in terms of pace, per DunksandThreees.com. The under is 7-3 in the last ten games between the two.
