Doncic return boosts Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers (4-2) received some great news this weekend with the return of Doncic to the courts. The ex-Mavericks ace was forced to sit for three games after a blistering start to the season but came back on Friday to dominate the Grizzlies, putting up 39 points, 12 rebounds and six assists to mark his third double-double with 35+ points in as many games this season. Doncic now averages 45.3 ppg, 11.7 rebounds and 7.7 assists so far for the Lakers as he begins his first full season on the West Coast. The Lakers powered past Memphis with a huge second half performance to win 117-112 and begin the NBA Cup group stage with a win.
Austin Reaves has also stepped up for LA this year to make Doncic's absence less painful. The 27-year-old ranks fifth among qualified NBA players with 32.0 ppg while shooting 50.4% from the field and 36.2% from deep. The Lakers place second in the league with an effective FG% of 58.6% to start the year. On the injury front, LeBron James (back), Gabe Vincent (ankle), Maxi Kleber (oblique) and Adou Thiero (knee) are all confirmed absentees for Monday's game. Deandre Ayton (back) was marked as questionable going into Sunday's game against Miami.

Trail Blazers on a roll
The Portland Trail Blazers (4-2) have recovered from a tough start to the new season to finish October two games above .500 and with plenty of reasons for optimism. Portland dropped two of their first three games but roared back to win the last three, including an impressive win over the Lakers on the road and Friday's 109-107 nailbiter over Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets. Jerami Grant decided that game with two free throws with less than two seconds remaining on the clock, getting a total of 16 points off the bench. Deni Avdija led Portland on scoring with 23 points.
Avdija is averaging 22.7 points per game so far for the Trail Blazers with 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists. Turnovers have been an issue for the forward, however, with an average of 3.8 giveaways per game so far, tying him in sixth among NBA players. Portland has been especially strong under the glass, claiming 14.0 offensive boards per game to rank sixth in the league through six games. On the injury front, Damian Lillard (Achilles) is out for the season without dressing once. Scoot Henderson (hamstring) is aiming to return in the second week of November as he eyes his 2025-26 debut. Matisse Thybulle (thumb) pulled up on Friday and is expected to miss the Lakers game.
Lakers vs. Trail Blazers Pick
Lakers vs. Trail Blazers Spread Pick
- Lakers to cover (5 Units)
I like the Lakers for Monday's game. Portland got the better of LA last time they met, but this Lakers team is a whole different proposition with a healthy Doncic on the court and he showed no ill-effects from his injury in a brilliant display against Memphis. The Lakers have been much better on the road so far in 2025-26, winning all of their games and going 3-0 ATS. The Trail Blazers have struggled to make their shots this year with an effective FG% of 52% (23rd in NBA) and that puts them at a big disadvantage against this Lakers team.
Take the Lakers.
Lakers vs. Trail Blazers Over/Under Pick
- Over (5 Units)
The Lakers have put up some big scores so far in 2025-26 and have gone 5-1 on the over in their six games before hosting Miami on Sunday. The Trail Blazers are also offense-oriented and I can see this one ending with a big total. Portland averages 121.2 ppg (7th in NBA) with 116.7 points allowed on average. It ranks fourth in the NBA with 108.7 possessions per game while also creating 8.2 extra scoring chances per game, the second-best mark in pro basketball behind the Knicks. The Trail Blazers have gone 4-2 on the over so far.
Take the over.
