Defensive Issues for Grizzlies

The Grizzlies have had defensive issues early on the season, as they have given up at least 131 points in their two losses and at least 122 points in three of their four games. In their last game, they fell 131-118 to the Golden State Warriors on the road on Monday, allowing them to shoot 53% from the floor and 44.2% from 3-point land while they shot 45.5% and 30.8% from long range. Ja Morant led the way with 23 points but missed all three of his 3-pointers and was only 8-23 from the field, and Jaren Jackson Jr. had 16 points. Memphis failed to cover as an 8-point underdog, and they are 2-2 ATS.

Morant (22.3 ppg) leads four players averaging in double figures, and he has not shot over 35.7% from the floor in any of the last three games. Second leading scorer, rookie Cedric Coward (16.5 ppg) had scored at least 14 points in the first three games before nine points in the last one. Jaren Jackson Jr. (17.5 ppg) had shot at least 50% in the first three games before 44.4% shooting in the last game. Last season, the Grizzlies won all four games facing the Suns.

Season Highs in Loss for Suns

While the Suns scored a season high in their last game, they also gave up a season high in a 138-134 OT road loss to the Utah Jazz. They did hold the Jazz to 40.7% shooting and 32.7% 3-pt shooting, but they only shot 42.5% and 36.45% from deep and gave up 10 more offensive rebounds. Devin Booker led the way in the loss with 23 points, Mark Williams came off the bench for 25 points, and Grayson Allen had 23 points. Phoenix failed to cover as a 2-point underdog, and they are 0-3 ATS in their last three games.

Booker (28.5 ppg) also had 10 assists in the last game, and he has scored at least 31 points in three of the four games. Second leading scorer Dillon Brooks (19.3 ppg) sat out the Jazz game with a groin injury and is out for this game as well. Allen (17.5 ppg) has been up and down in the shooting department, and in the last game only shot 36.8% from the floor. Royce O’Neil (11.8 ppg) is the only other player averaging in double figures and is only shooting 35% from the floor over the last three games. Jalen Green averaged 21 ppg last season and was the cornerstone in the trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets, but he has not played this season with a hamstring injury and is out for this game. On the season, the Suns are 1-0 at home.

Injuries

  • Dillon Brooks – Out
  • Jalen Green – Out

Grizzlies vs. Suns Pick

Spread Pick Grizzlies vs. Suns

  • Grizzlies (+4 Units)

The Grizzlies have flipped wins and losses early on this season, and they lost their last game. The Suns have lost three in a row since winning their season opener, and two of the three losses were by at least 22 points. Phoenix lost all four games facing Memphis last season, and they are shorthanded without the second leading scorer, Brooks (19 ppg), and Jalen Green, who averaged 121 ppg. While Memphis is also missing some players, none are big scorers. The Grizzlies have struggled on defense in their two losses, giving up at least 131 points in each, but in the two wins, they have scored 128 points. Regarding the Memphis Grizzlies vs. Phoenix Suns prediction, the Grizzlies and their offense will be tough to handle for a Suns team that has given up at least 129 points in their last three games, and they are the pick to cover on the road.

Over/Under Pick for Grizzlies vs. Suns

  • Over (+4 Units)

In the eight games these teams have combined to play, the total has gone over seven times, and that is the pick I am leaning towards in this game. Both teams have had issues on the defensive side of the ball. The Grizzlies have given up at least 131 points in their two losses, and the Suns have given up at least 129 points in each of their last three games. However, both teams can score, as Memphis has put up 128 points in each of its two wins, and the Suns scored a season high 1of 34 points in their last game. Two teams that can score but with poor defenses lead to a high-scoring game, so the Over is the pick.
