The Heat finished 10th in the East with a 37-45 record and made the playoffs before losing in the first round to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Magic were seventh in the East with a 41-41 record and lost in the opening round of the playoffs to the Boston Celtics. This is the first of four games these teams will play against one another, so letβs take a deeper dive into the opening game. Clean angles only: NBA predictions for the Miami Heat at the Orlando Magic.
Heat Looking for a Spark
The Miami Heat are in a bit of a new spot as they are coming off their first sub-500 season since 2018 after going 37-45 a year ago. The team is going to look different with Duncan Robinson, Kyle Anderson, Haywood Highsmith, Kevin Love, Alec Burks, and Kyle Anderson all no longer in South Beach. The team was able to make the postseason as they won eight of their last 12 games to get the final play-in spot, but they are still looking to find their footing after trading away Jimmy Butler.
The Heat need a healthy Tyler Herro to pick up the slack, but had had foot surgery in mid-September and is out to begin the season. Norman Powell is a big-time scorer who had his best season last year at 31, averaging 21.8 points per game on 41.8% three-point shooting for the LA Clippers.
Their offense was a weak point of the team as the Heat was 24th in the NBA by scoring 110.6 points per game last season. The defense was able to significantly carry the franchise as their 110.0 points per game against was seventh in basketball as well.

Those Magic Changes
The Orlando Magic are looking to take another step forward as they finished with a 41-41 record last season. The team was led by their defense and added a significant shooter in the offseason as their big splash. Orlando was able to add rookies Jase Richardson and Noah Penda, as well as trading for Memphis guard Desmond Bane and signing Tyus Jones. However, they lost Cole Anthony, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Gary Harris, Caleb Houstan, and Cory Joseph since their last game played.
Bane is averaging 41% from the three-point line in his career and averaged 19.2 points per game last season. He'll be a nice complement to Paolo Banchero (6-10, 250), who averaged 25.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. Franz Wagner added 24.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game. Injuries limited both as Wagner played in 60 games, Banchero played in just 46 and point guard Jalen Suggs (16.2ppg, 3.7apg) played in just 35 games.
The Magic significantly struggled throughout the season last year as the team was 28th in the sport, as they were only able to score 105.4 points per game as a team. Orlandoβs defense was the best in the NBA last season as they were only giving up 105.5 points per game.

Miami Heat at Orlando Magic Pick
Spread Pick for Heat vs. Magic
- Orlando Magic -8.5 (5 units)
The Miami Heat are not looking too good entering the season as they were 0-6 in the preseason, including losing twice to the Orlando Magic. Miami is still trying to see what the future holds after trading away Jimmy Butler last season, but without Tyler Herro and Terry Rozier to begin the season in the backcourt, they are going to be facing an uphill battle. Orlando is expected to be even better this season than they were last year with the addition of Bane and Miamiβs only hope is coach Erik Spoelstra getting the best out of his roster to open the season, but go with the Orlando Magic to cover the spread to open the regular season.
Over/Under Pick for Heat vs. Magic
- OVER 217.5 (5 units)
With the lack of shooting being on the court for Miami, people are going to hover to the under, but over 217.5 total points feels like the better bet. These teams can surprise a lot of people offensively as the Heat should see an elite frontcourt with Bam Adebayo and second-year player Kelβel Ware stepping up as Ware was top-five in rebounds, made field goals, blocks, and points amongst rookies last season from Jan. 1 throughout the season. Orlando has a young core that should be able to be outstanding offensively and with Jalen Suggs expected to be healthy after a season-ending knee injury that required surgery, there is a lot of excitement for the team to be a good offensive team with additions like Desmond Bane to help out. The over hit in four of their last five games against one another so go with OVER 217.5 POINTS here.
