Pelicans Clip the Mavericks
Playing the second leg of a back-to-back, the New Orleans Pelicans earned their second win of the season with a 101-99 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Saddiq Bey had season highs with 22 points and nine rebounds. Jeremiah Fears and reserve Jose Alvarado each added 13 points.
- The Pelicans used their seventh starting lineup in eight games. They played without power forward Zion Williamson (out for at least a week with a strained hamstring) and point guard Jordan Poole (quad). Poole is now listed as out for 7-10 days.
- They held a 56-44 rebounding advantage yet were outscored 18-10 on second-chance points. Poole is expected back for this game against the Spurs. They announced Tuesday that Williamson will miss at least one week due to a strained left hamstring. The timeline likely puts Williamson out of action for at least New Orleans' next four games.
- Realistically, the star forward is in a position to potentially be re-evaluated at some point before the Nov. 12 matchup against Portland.
- New Orleans will likely turn to a combination of Herbert Jones and Saddiq Bey to fill out Williamson's minutes for the next week. At 2-6, they are off to a poor start, and Zion out for the next week will put a lot of strain on the young supporting cast.

Spurs on a Back to Back
*Published before Friday’s results*
San Antonio is in action Friday night against the Houston Rockets and will be on the second leg of a back-to-back for this meeting with the Pelicans. They dropped a heartbreaker two nights ago against the Los Angeles Lakers.
- Victor Wembanyama had 19 points and eight rebounds before fouling out with just over a minute to play.
- The Spurs have lost two straight after a 5-0 start. Seven different Spurs scored in double digits on the night, including all five starters, but Wembanyama's 19 led the team.
- Stephon Castle and Jeremy Sochan had 16 points apiece. Castle had eight assists in the contest. The dimes tied his season high, and Castle continues to provide an impressive force for the Spurs, recording multiple steals in four straight games while pulling down at least five boards in seven straight to begin the season.
- Castle is averaging 19.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 2.0 steals, and 1.4 threes while shooting 51.8 percent from the floor, and last season's Rookie of the Year seems poised to take a big step forward in 2025-26. They should have more success against a tanking Pelicans club.
- Rookie guard Dylan Harper (strained calf) is out for multiple weeks.
Pelicans vs. Spurs Game Pick
Spread Pick for Pelicans vs Spurs
- San Antonio Spurs ATS (4 Units)
San Antonio is in action on Friday and will be on the second leg of a back-to-back for this one. Considering their youth and the fact that they are struggling, I expect everyone to suit up for this game, including Wembanyama. Wembanyama remains a force on the defensive end regardless of his offense, and he's recorded at least one block and one steal in seven straight games to begin the season, averaging 25.6 points, 12.9 boards, 4.1 blocks, 3.1 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.9 threes. New Orleans will not have Zion, and there will be little to no resistance down low for Wemby to get easy buckets. Take the Spurs to win and cover.
OVER/UNDER PICK for Pels vs. Spurs
- UNDER (4 Units)
The Pelicans and Spurs are nestled at the bottom of the pack with respect to pace of play. San Antonio will also be on the second leg of a back-to-back. Further, the Pelicans are missing their best player, Zion Williamson, and Jordan Poole is out. Unsurprisingly, the Spurs are second in rebounding percentage, so there will be little to no daylight in the paint for the Pelicans. They are fourth in paint defense. Take the under with confidence here.
