Road unkind to Knicks

The Knicks opened the season with two home wins but have followed that up with back-to-back losses in their first road endeavor of the season. This matchup wraps up their brief stint away from home, where they will play their next seven games.

New York has struggled to get their offense in motion, averaging just 110.5 points through four games, which ranks 27th overall. They are shooting 40.6% from the field and hitting 14.8 threes a night. The Knicks lose the ball 14 times a night and have a 1.92 assist-to-turnover ratio to show for it. The bench has not been much of a factor, chipping in with only 22.5 points per game, the second-lowest mark in the NBA. Jalen Brunson has taken full control in the scoring department, with 31.8 points and 5 assists per game. The next closest scorer on the team is Mikal Bridges with 18 points a night.

The Knicks do have the fourth-best scoring defense in the league, allowing just 110.5 points per game. Teams are shooting 47.3% from the field and knocking down 15.3 three pointers against them. They’ve grabbed 49.5 rebounds per game, and their +10.2-rebound differential is fourth best in the league. New York squeezes 14.8 turnovers from teams by way of their 8.3 steals and 3.3 blocks per game. Karl-Anthony Towns is fifth in the league with 13.5 rebounds to go with 17 points per game. He also leads the team with a block per game, and OG Anouby is snatching a team-high 2.2 steals a night.

Bulls keep clean

As of Thursday evening, the Bulls were one of just four undefeated teams left in the NBA and started the season 4-0 SU for the first time since 2021. This game will be the fourth home game in their first five games of the season.

The team has had four different high scorers in their four games, and eight players average over 20 minutes of playing time each night for Chicago, which is averaging 119.8 points per game. They are shooting 49.6% from the field and knocking down 12.8 threes. The Bulls turn the ball over 16 times per game, leading them to a 1.91 assist-to-turnover ratio, which ranks eighth in the league. Both Josh Giddey and Nikola Vucevic have three double-doubles in four games. Giddey is leading the team with 19.5 points and 7.8 assists per game. Vucevic is adding 18.3 points a night on 58.3% shooting from the field.

The Chicago scoring defense has yielded 111.3 points per game, the sixth-best mark in the NBA. Opponents are shooting 46.4% from the field against them, with a league-low 7 three pointers per game. The Bulls have a +6.7 rebound differential thanks to their 48.3 rebounds per game. They are forcing 11.5 turnovers from foes and averaging 7.5 steals and 4 blocks per game. Vucevic has been a monster on the glass and ranks sixth in the league with 13.3 rebounds per game. Trey Jones is leading the team with 3 steals per game, and Matas Buzelis is blocking a shot a night to go with his 16.9 points per game.

Team notes

  • Vucevic is shooting 61.8% on two-point shots.
  • Ayo Aosunmu is averaging a team-high 2.3 threes in 25.3 minutes per game off the bench.
  • Chicago averages 59.5 points per game in the paint, the top average in the league.
  • They are holding opponents to 25.8 points in the second quarter, the second-best mark in the NBA.

Knicks vs. Bulls Picks

Spread Picks for Knicks vs. Bulls

  • Bulls +4 (5 units)

This is the first game of a home-and-home series that takes the teams to New York on Sunday. Last season, the Bulls went 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS against the Knicks. Chicago has seemingly taken another step forward as they look much stronger to open this season than they did a year ago. They are long, lanky, and athletic, and the opposition is having a hard time getting past them. Chicago will look to neutralize Towns, and they should be able to slow him down enough to create the distance they need. The Knicks shot just 40.5% from the field away from home and coughed up 18.5 turnovers per game. The Bulls are shooting 50.4% from the field at the United Center and getting to the free-throw line 23.7 times a game. Chicago is 5-1 ATS in their last six games against the Knicks.

Take the Bulls getting the points at home.

Over/Under Pick for Knicks vs. Bulls

  • Over 235.5 (5 units)

Last season, these two teams averaged a combined 245.3 points per game when they met. Per DunksandThrees.com, the Knicks are 22nd in pace, averaging 99.7 possessions per 48 minutes, but Chicago ranks sixth in that category with a 105.3 mark. The Bulls averaged 127.5 points at home in their last two games, and they’ve done an excellent job at distributing the ball and getting many different players involved. They should be able to pull the Knicks along for the ride as well, considering Chicago’s ability to control the pace once they’ve taken over. New York can shoot a lot better than their 40.6% mark from the field and should get plenty of chances in this game. The over is 4-1 in the last five meetings between the teams.

Take the over.
