Magic generate first win streak

A four-game losing streak set the Magic back to 1-4 SU to start the season, but they have since been able to string together their first back-to-back wins of the season. This is the final game of a five-game road trip in which the team is currently 2-2 SU.

The 125 points scored on Saturday matched their season high, set in their season opener. Orlando’s offense is averaging 116.9 points per game, 16th in the NBA, and they are shooting 48.1% from the field. Their 10.3 three-pointers made each night are the fewest in the league, but their 24.3 free throws per game are the third most. They cough up 16.3 turnovers a game, and their 1.456 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks 29th overall. Paolo Banchero shot 60% from the field and went 7-7 from the line to score 28 points on Saturday. He leads the team with 23.3 points, 20th in the league.

On defense, the Magic are serving up 116.3 points per game, 11th in the league. Opponents are shooting 47.5% from the field and averaging 11 threes per game against them. Their 45.9 rebounds per game are 11th in the NBA and have left them with a +0.5-rebound differential. They are averaging 7.9 steals and 6.3 blocks per game, allowing them to get 15.4 turnovers from their foes. Banchero is 15th in the league with 9.3 rebounds and also leads the team with 1.3 blocks per game. Jalen Suggs averages 1.5 steals per game.

Team notes

  • Franz Wagner averages only 1.9 turnovers over 34.3 minutes per game.
  • They’ve been able to start hot, averaging 32.3 points in the first quarter of games, sixth best in the league.
  • The Magic are drawing 25 fouls per game, tied for fourth most in the NBA.
  • Moritz Wagner has yet to play and remains sidelined with a knee injury.

Hawks finally home for a spell

The Hawks are coming off a four-game road swing, which they split, 2-2 SU. This game is the start of a three-game homestand, the first time this season that the team has had consecutive games at State Farm Arena.

Atlanta ranks 21st in the league in scoring defense, allowing 115.1 points per game. Teams have shot 47.7% from the field against them, hitting 10.6 threes per game, the third fewest in the NBA. Their 13.3 turnovers per game have led to a 2.14 assist-to-turnover ratio, which ranks third in the league. Jalen Johnson has led the team in scoring in each of the last three games and in four of seven contests this season. The fifth-year forward leads the team with 21.2 points and is second with 5 assists per game. Kristaps Porzingis recorded his first double-double of the season on Sunday and is second on the team with 18.2 points per game.

On defense, the Hawks are giving up 118.1 points per game, 18th in the league. Teams are shooting 46.3% from the field against Atlanta this season, with 12.7 threes per game. The Hawks are cleaning up the glass for 43 rebounds, leading them to a -3-rebound differential. They are forcing 15.9 turnovers from opponents while also averaging 8.7 steals and 4.7 blocks per game. Johnson is the team’s rebound leader, grabbing nine a night. Dyson Daniels is second in the NBA with 2.6 steals per game.

Team notes

  • Zaccharie Risacher, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2024 draft, had a career high 3 steals and 5 assists in Sunday’s loss.
  • The Hawks rank 20th in the league, averaging 57.4 points in the first half.
  • The team is shooting just 75.4% from the free-throw line, the seventh-worst mark in the league.
  • Trae Young remains out through the end of the month after suffering a knee injury in Brooklyn last Wednesday.

Magic vs. Hawks Picks

Spread Pick for Magic vs. Hawks

  • Magic -2.5 (5 units)

These two teams met in the second game of the season, which was a four-point win for the Hawks on the road as -6 underdogs. Atlanta played that game with the services of Young. The Hawks have split the two games in his absence. That was also the start of Orlando’s four-game losing streak, which they’ve done well to turn around in their last two efforts. Their defense has done well by them in those efforts, holding opponents to 100.5 points per game. Orlando ranks 10th in the league in defensive efficiency (1.100) and they are holding teams to 53.2% shooting on two-point shots, tied for the seventh-best mark in the league. The Hawks shoot the sixth fewest three pointers per game in the league and are only getting to the line 26.1 times a night. The Magic defense should be able to limit their good looks inside the perimeter. Orlando is 6-4 ATS in the last ten games between the two teams.

Take the Magic.

Over/Under Pick for Magic vs. Hawks

  • Under 229.5 (5 units)

These two teams combined for 218 points when they met a week and a half ago. This matchup kind of bucks the trend in that both teams rank in the top 10 of the league in pace, but I’m not expecting this game to turn into a track meet by any means. DunksandThrees.com has Orlando 6th, with 103.6 possessions per 48 minutes, and Atlanta 8th, with 102.9 possessions per 48 minutes. However, the Magic are 18th in adjusted offense and the Hawks are 17th. They are also two of the bottom three three-point shooting teams in the league, each averaging under 11 treys per game. The under is 7-3 between the teams over their last ten meetings.

Take the under.
