Magic Thwart the Hornets

After opening the first quarter with a 38-point spurt, the Orlando Magic won their second game of the young NBA season, a 123-107 win over the Charlotte Hornets. They opened an early lead and coasted throughout the contest.

  • Franz Wagner scored 21 points, and Paolo Banchero had 18 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Wagner was questionable with a left heel contusion going into the game, but started.
  • The win snapped a four-game losing streak. They suffered a tough loss against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night, as this was the second leg of a back-to-back.
  • Banchero did not look for his shot much through the first half of action, instead playing the distributor role on offense, and all nine of his assists came during the first half. He started to look for his shot more over the second half, and while he was efficient from the floor, he still struggled at the line.
  • Banchero is averaging a career-high 10.3 free-throw attempts per game this season, but he is converting only 71 percent of them. They were elite defensively last season, but are near the bottom of the league in defensive rating through the first six games.

Wizards Fall to the Champs

Facing the defending champions Thursday night, the Wizards hung tight in the first half but failed to remain competitive down the stretch in a 127-108 road loss.

  • CJ McCollum had 19 points and Bilal Coulibaly added 16 for Washington, which lost its third straight and fell to 1-4. Oklahoma City forced 22 turnovers and had only six.
  • Coulibaly started right away in his season debut, sending Bub Carrington to the bench. Although injuries limited Coulibaly to 59 games in his second season, the 2024 first-round pick took a big step forward in his development as a regular producer for the Wizards. He is expected to retain his starting role at the four for the duration of the season, but the condition of his thumb should be monitored.
  • Sarr recorded 14 points (5-11 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 2-2 FT), eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and one steal across 26 minutes. After a superb line against the Sixers, Sarr's point total fell back to earth, but he still registered a good rebound total. He came two rebounds shy of his third double-double over the first six games of the season, and he is trending in the right direction despite his team's early struggles.

Magic vs. Wizards Game Pick

Spread Pick for Magic vs. Wizards

  • Orlando Magic ATS (4 units)

Orlando won their first game of the season, and then proceeded to drop four in a row, including a tough back-to-back set against the Detroit Pistons. On the second leg, they ended that streak, and come into this road meeting against the Wizards, looking to generate some consistency on the defensive end. They finished near the top in defensive rating last year, and I expect them to play much better against a Wizards team 26th in offensive rating to open the year. Take the Magic to win and cover.

OVER/UNDER PICK for Magic vs. Wizards

  • OVER (5 units)

Orlando has seemingly adopted a different offensive style this season, and they are pushing the tempo at a higher rate than last season. They finished dead last in pace of play last year, but they are 12th to open this year. They are still abysmal from beyond the arc, but they have been near the bottom over the last three seasons, so that is not surprising. The increased pace, though, will give them more opportunities to hoist up more triples. Washington is fourth in pace, so the over in this one is an easy take.
