Unbeaten Streak is over
Philadelphia opened the season at 4-0 before falling to Boston at home 109-108 on Friday night as part of the NBA Cup. The Sixers never led the game and trailed by 24 points in the second quarter. Joel Embiid, who missed a three-pointer at the buzzer to win the game, scored 20 points in 25 minutes. Tyrese Maxey had a great game with 26 points and 14 assists. But the 76ers turned the ball over 18 times, including five from Maxey.
Embiid (17.3ppg, 56.3rpg) has a minutes restriction due to a knee issue that prevents him from playing back-to-back games and is only averaging 22 minutes per contest. Maxey leads the team in scoring with 35.2 points per game on 46.2% shooting (46.8% 3pt). Kelly Oubre Jr. has been a nice third option with 17.6 points and 7.0 rebounds, while shooting 50.9% from the field and 44.4% from long range.
Overall, Philly is fourth in the league in scoring at 125 points per game and first in three-point percentage (41.3%). On defense, they are strong against the three (33.3%), but a little below average in field goal defense (47.7%, 19th).
Key injuries: C Embiid (knee recovery), F Paul George (knee) is day-to-day. G Jared McCain (thumb) is out for another week.

Nets looking for first win
This is going to be another long year in Brooklyn. The Nets won 25 games last season and are in rebuilding mode with five first-round picks. But their highest was the eighth pick overall (Egor Demin) as they couldn't get in the top five. The Nets haven't played since Wednesday, when they fell at home to Atlanta 117-112. Michael Porter Jr. led the Nets with 32 points and nine rebounds on 12-of-20 shooting (4 of 9 3pt), while Cam Thomas added 19 points. Nic Claxton had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. None of the rookies that played produced much as Demin had just four points off the bench with six rebounds and four assists in 16 minutes (1-of-6 FG).
Thomas leads the Nets with 23.4 points per game but is shooting just 39.1% from the field. Porter J. contributes 21.6 points per game, adding 6.2 rebounds with 3.2 assists on 50.6% shooting.
The biggest issue for the Nets is on the defensive end, where they are allowing 127.8 points per game (29th), 52.3% shooting (30th) and 44.7% from long range (30th). On offense, they are shooting 45.6% from the field (18th) and 35.4% from long range (14th).
They don't have any key injuries coming into this game.
Sixers vs. Nets Pick and Prediction
Spread Pick for 76ers vs. Nets
- Brooklyn +5.5 (4 units)
The Nets haven't played since Wednesday, so they have three days off to prepare for the Sixers. I know there were injuries involved, but they did beat Philadelphia in their last two games last season. The Sixers still need PG13 back in the lineup and Embiid will not play in this game as part of a planned absence. The Nets do have some scorers in Cam Thomas and Porter Jr. Even though the Nets struggle on defense, Philly hasn't been great at 19th in Adjusted Defensive rating according to DunksandThrees.com. Brooklyn is going to win at some point and who not Sunday? Even if they don't, they'll cover this game.
Over/Under for 76ers vs. Nets
- Under 233.5 (4 units)
You have some teams that have defensive issues; however, neither team plays at a fast pace. Brooklyn ranks 25th in pace of play and Philly is 20th. Philadelphia won't have Embiid, which means they'll be a lot more perimeter-oriented. That means a lot more minutes for Andre Drummond (6-11, 280), who likes a slower pace as well. The Nets have gone under in two of their last three games.
