Sixers suffer late loss
The Philadelphia 76ers (5-2) are on the mend after their disastrous 2024-25 season, where the injury-ravaged Sixers went 24-58 and missed the postseason for the first time since 2017. Philadelphia won four in a row to start the year before going down to the Celtics in its NBA Cup opener, and got back to winning ways by beating the Nets 129-105 in a one-sided matchup - though the team will be furious at having let a huge lead slip in the second half to go down to the Bulls 113-111 on Tuesday.
Tyrese Maxey remains dominant. In the absence of Joel Embiid against the Nets, Maxey put up 26 points, six rebounds and seven assists with just a single turnover while shooting 4-9 from behind the 3-point line. He followed that up with 39 points against Chicago, while Embiid came back to get 20 points in 25 minutes of court time, almost all in the first half. Maxey ranked second among NBA players with 33.3 ppg through the first six games of the season.
The Sixers have also been boosted by what is shaping up to be a superb rookie season from V.J. Edgecombe. The third overall Draft pick in 2025 put up 34 points in his pro debut against the Celtics and averaged 20.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists, leading the current rookie class on scoring and assists through six games. The Sixers' injury report has Paul George (knee) and Dom Barlow (elbow) still inactive, while given Philadelphia's careful management of Embiid since his return, it remains to be seen whether they will start the center on no rest after playing against the Bulls Tuesday.

Cavs break losing snap
The Cleveland Cavaliers (5-2) managed to stop a two-game losing skid in their last outing as they took down the Hawks, coming through in the second half to win 117-109. The Cavs had previously dropped games to the Celtics and Raptors to fall back to .500 after six games, a disappointing start for a team that went 64-18 in 2024-25 and finished first in the Eastern Conference before getting eliminated in five games by the Pacers in the conference semi-finals.
Donovan Mitchell came up big for the Cavs in that last win. Mitchell sank eight 3-pointers on his way to a season-best 37 points, 24 of which came after halftime. The guard also picked up five assists and two steals while shooting 5-5 from the free-throw line after sitting during the loss to Toronto with a knee problem. On the season, he leads Cleveland in scoring with 29.5 ppg while his mark of 4.0 3 PM/G ranks fourth among NBA players this year.
On the injury front, the Cavs have Max Strus (foot) out until December. Darius Garland (toe), Jarrett Allen (finger) and Sam Merrill (hip) are marked questionable. Merrill is averaging 17.3 ppg in 2025-26 and leads the league with 4.5 3PM/G so far.
76ers vs. Cavaliers Pick
76ers vs. Cavaliers Spread Pick
- Cavaliers to cover (5 Units)
While the Cavs have not found the same form that drove them to the top of the East last year, I still like them to cover on Wednesday, taking advantage of some attrition on the Sixers' roster. This will be Philadelphia's third game in four days, and given the need to ration the minutes of returning stars like Embiid and Maxey, who missed 30 games last year, there is a good chance the Sixers could run out of steam against a good home team. The Sixers showed their fragility by throwing away a 19-point halftime lead against Chicago as Embiid's presence in the second half was severely limited. The Cavs have shot well from deep, making 15.9 3-pointers per game, the second-best mark in the league; a good sign against Philadelphia, who allow 39.3 3PA/G in 2025-26 (23rd in NBA). Get on Cleveland to go hard against a tired team and cover.
Take the Cavaliers.
76ers vs. Cavaliers Over/Under Pick
- Over (4 Units)
The over looks like the way to go on Wednesday. Philadelphia has been exceptional offensively so far this year and led the NBA before Tuesday's loss to Chicago with an average of 125.7 ppg. Even if Nick Nurse chooses to rest or limit his key pieces, the Sixers should help push this total high. They also allowed 118.2 ppg ahead of the Bulls game, ranking 20th among NBA defenses. Cleveland ranks 12th in the NBA with 105.0 possessions per game.
Take the over.
