- Devin Booker scored 31 points and Dillon Brooks added 22 points in his Suns debut. The Kings led by 17 points at halftime, but the Suns came back to cut the deficit to 92-90 entering the fourth.
- Phoenix took its first lead of the second half when Royce O'Neale hit a 3-pointer with just over 10 minutes left. The Suns were without projected starting guard Jalen Green (hamstring), who was acquired from the Rockets in the offseason in the trade for Kevin Durant. Green is listed as out for this game.
- "This whole preseason and training camp, we were making everything," Booker said in his postgame interview with Suns TV. "So this was a good test for us."
Booker is a career 24.5 points per game scorer, but is coming off a 33.2% 3-point shooting campaign in 2024-25 -- the second-lowest percentage of his career. He shot 1-of-3 from deep on Wednesday, but made up for it with a 9-of-16 effort inside the arc.
Nuggets Lose in Overtime
Denver opened the 2025 regular season with a road meeting against the Golden State Warriors, pushing it to overtime but coming up short in a 137-131 loss. The Nuggets blew a 14-point lead late as Steph Curry scored 17 points in the game's final seven minutes, including a 34-footer late to send the game into the extra period.
- Aaron Gordon collected 50 points (17-21 FG, 10-11 3Pt, 6-6 FT), eight rebounds, two assists, and one block in 39 minutes. Gordon put together one of the most efficient 50-point performances in recent memory, missing only one shot from beyond the arc while setting career highs in points and made threes.
- He broke Alex English's franchise record for a season opener of 47 points set in 1985 against Golden State.
- The Warriors went on a 12-2 run in overtime that started with a corner 3-pointer from Al Horford and another triple that made it 133-127 with 41 seconds to play.
- Gordon's 10 3-pointers tied Terry Rozier's record set in 2020 for the most made in a season opener.
- Gordon was much improved from long range a season ago, converting 43.6 percent of his attempts in 51 regular-season appearances.
- Nikola Jokic finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists to join Oscar Robertson as the only players with four triple-doubles in season openers.
Phoenix Suns vs. Denver Nuggets Game Pick
Spread Pick for Suns vs. Nuggets
- Denver Nuggets ATS (5 Units)
Phoenix is on the second leg of a back-to-back for this meeting with the Denver Nuggets. Devin Booker is the lone wolf standing after Bradley Beal and Kevin Durant were moved in the offseason. His running mate in the back court is not quite ready to play. Jalen Green has a hamstring injury and will not play in this one. Denver is coming off a tough loss against the Warriors, and I expect them to play well in their home opener after a day off. Gordon may not score 50 points again, but Jokic could approach that as the Suns can't defend him. Denver won the prior matchup in a high-scoring affair on March 7th last season. Take the Nuggets again.
OVER/UNDER PICK for Suns vs. Nuggets
- OVER (5 Units)
The Suns hovered in the top 10 in pace of play last season, and that was with the aging Bradley Beal and Kevin Durant. They figure to push the tempo more this season with the additions of Dillon Brooks and Jalen Green (who wonβt play). In their last meeting, both teams went bonkers in the scoring department in a 149-141 Nuggets win. Phoenix finished 27th in defensive rating last season. I expect them to be better this year, but this is a formidable Nuggets offense. Take the over.
