Suns Blow it Open in the Third Quarter

The Suns were at home in their last game in a 115-102 win over the Clippers, where they were down by three at the half but blew it open in the third quarter, outscoring L.A. by 17 points. The Suns shot 44.6% from the field and 38.8% from 3-point land, and the Clippers shot 44.3% and32.3% from downtown. Jalen Green made his season debut and went for 29 points, Devin Booker had 24 points, and Grason Allen had 18 points. Phoenix covered the spread as a 2.5-point favorite, and they have covered in four of their last five games.

Green averaged 21 ppg last season and missed the first eight games with a hamstring injury. He was 6-13 from behind the 3-point arc in the Clippers game and was the main player the Suns received from the Houston Rockets in the Kevin Durant trade. Devin Booker (30.2 ppg) had averaged 33.6 ppg before going for 24 points in the last game. Third leading scorer Dillon Brooks (19.3 ppg) has missed the last few games with a groin injury and is likely out to face the Clippers. Mark Williams (12.3 ppg, 10 rpg) has totaled 29 points and 26 rebounds in the last two games. On the season, Phoenix is 4-1 at home but winless (0-4) on the road.

Injuries

  • Brooks is the only currently listed player injured for the Suns.

Will the Clippers Get their Big Guns Back?

In the loss to the Suns, the Clippers were without their big guns, with Kawhi Leonard (24.3 ppg) and James Harden (23.3 ppg) both sidelines. Leonard missed his season game with an ankle injury, and Harden did not play for personal reasons, so assume he may be back. In the Suns’ loss, Ivica Zubac led the way with a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds, Cam Christie came off the bench to score a season high 17 points, and John Collins had 13 points, also off the bench. L.A. has failed to cover the spread in their last six games and are 1-7 ATS on the season.

The Clippers' defense has been decent on the season, but they rank third-to-last in the NBA at 110.5 ppg. Harden and company really tried to get the Clippers to sign ex-Suns guard Bradley Beal to come to L.A., and while that happened, he is only averaging 7.4 ppg on 35.9% shooting. Zubac (14.4 ppg, 9.9 rpg) had only totaled 16 points in two games before 23 in the last one. Future Hall of Famer Chris Paul has looked like a shell of his old self, averaging 2.3 ppg and 3.6 assists per game in his return to the Clip Joint. All three of the Clippers' wins have come on their floor (3-2).

Injuries - Leonard (ankle) and Hadren (personal) are out.

  • Kawhi Leonard – Out
  • James Harden – Out

Suns vs. Clippers Pick

Spread Pick Suns vs. Clippers

  • Suns (+4 Units)

The Suns have won three of their last four games, but remain winless on the road, while the Clippers have lost three in a row. Phoenix beat L.A. in their house in their last game, with the Clip Joint missing their two stars of Leonard and Harden. It remains to be seen if they will play in the rematch, but I would think Harden would go, as he missed the last game due to personal reasons and not injury. Even under .500 at 4-5 the Suns have looked better than many thought they would after Kevin Durant and Brad Beal left. They have been better than the 3-5 Clippers, who have struggled to find their shot. Regarding the Phoenix Suns vs. L.A. Clippers prediction, the Suns will put up a fight against the Clippers, who have looked like a different team at home, and they will, at least, cover the spread against a Clippers team that has covered only time in eight games.

Over/Under Pick for Suns vs. Clippers

  • Under (+4 Units)

When these teams met in the Valley of the Sun in the last game, the total went under, and that is the pick I am leaning towards in this game. The Clippers are one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league and may be without their top two scorers, even though Harden may be on the floor. Still, Beal has not done much and L.A. has failed to score over 107 points in each of the last two games. Booker has been cooking and Jalen Green is back, but Phoenix still ranks in the middle of the pack in terms of scoring. On top of that, they will face a Clippers team that has had issues scoring the ball but has been decent on the defensive end of the floor. Even with uncertainty on who will be in the lineup, the Under is a good pick in this one.
