Portland Rebounds Behind Avdija’s Breakout

The Trail Blazers evened their record at 1-1 with a 139-119 win against the Warriors on Friday. Deni Avdija led the way with 26 points and six assists, which was his best performance in a Portland uniform. Jerami Grant added 22 points, while Toumani Camara chipped in 19 as the Blazers shot 47% from three-point territory and scored 66 points in the paint. The Blazers' strength in the paint is what helped them win, giving interim coach Tiago Splitter his first win after a turbulent week for the franchise. Portland had seven players scoring in double figures, including Jrue Holiday’s 12 points and 11 assists.

Through two games, the Trail Blazers are averaging 126.5 points on 47% shooting with 27.5 assists per night. The offense has thrived on ball movement and aggressive penetration, which has opened clean looks for the wings. Defensively, they’re averaging 11.5 steals but still allowing 118.5 points per contest, showing that turnovers are key to their transition rhythm. Portland’s ability to attack the paint could test a Lakers defense that has struggled early to protect the rim.

Portland’s win over Golden State showed how effective its frontcourt can be when Grant and Avdija both take part on a somewhat equal basis. The Blazers built a 13-point halftime lead thanks to a 41-point second quarter and never let up, outscoring the Warriors 73-56 after the break. The Trail Blazers will need a similar formula against the Lakers’ high-powered offense.

Injuries: The Trail Blazers remain short-handed. Robert Williams III is out until October 27, Scoot Henderson is sidelined until November 10, and Damian Lillard remains off the roster after his offseason departure.

Lakers Ride Doncic’s Early Season Fire

Los Angeles bounced back from an opening-night loss with a dominant home win against Minnesota. Luka Doncic erupted for 49 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists, continuing his historic start. He became just the fourth player in NBA history to open a season with consecutive 40-point performances, joining Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, and Anthony Davis. Doncic shot 14-for-23 with five threes and made 16 of 19 free throws. The Lakers supported him with balanced play from Austin Reaves, who contributed 25 points and 11 assists, while Rui Hachimura added 23. DeAndre Ayton’s presence in the paint helped steady the defense and secure a plus-10 rebounding margin.

Offensively, the Lakers rank near the top of the league through two games with 118.5 points per contest while shooting 56.9% from the field. Half-court spacing has been strong thanks to Reaves’ playmaking and Doncic’s ability to draw double teams. Defensively, they’re holding opponents to an average of 115 points, but will need to tighten up on shooters after giving up 40% from threat-point land to Minnesota. Still, the Lakers’ combination of shot-making and pace has allowed them to be a threat in any quarter.

In the last outing, Los Angeles took control early as Doncic poured in 23 first-quarter points, tying a franchise record for the past 30 years. By halftime, he had 32 and helped build a 15-point cushion that the Lakers never surrendered. Reaves and Hachimura continued to exploit mismatches while the defense tightened in the second half, holding Minnesota to 47 points.

Injuries: The Lakers’ will be tested. LeBron James is out until November 18 with sciatica, whileDoncic is out for a few days with knee and finger issues.

Portland Trail Blazers at Los Angeles Lakers Pick

Spread Pick for Trail Blazers vs. Lakers

  •  Los Angeles Lakers -4 (4 Units)

The Lakers’ offense behind Reaves, who should hold up against a Portland defense that allowed 118 points in its opener and continues to rely heavily on transition play. Los Angeles has shot nearly 57% from the field so far, while Portland’s depth remains a problem without Scoot Henderson and Robert Williams III. The Lakers’ inside scoring, combined with Ayton’s presence on the boards, should counter Portland’s improved play in the paint. If Doncic suits up, his recent dominance gives LA the upper hand against a defense still adjusting to new leadership.

Over/Under Pick for Trail Blazers vs Lakers

  • Over 240.5 (5 Units)

Both teams have leaned on offense early, averaging a combined 245 points per game. The Trail Blazers have scored 139 and 114 in the first two outings, while the Lakers have hit 128 and 109. Portland’s 47% three-point shooting and LA’s 56.9% overall mark suggest another fast-paced, high-scoring affair. Neither defense has shown the ability to string together consistent stops, and both offenses thrive in the open court. Expect extended scoring runs from both sides and another night of great scoring by Reaves, Ayton and Rui Hachimura.
