Blazers Win After Coaching Turmoil
In Tiago Splitter’s first game as interim head coach for the Portland Trail Blazers, his team blew out the Golden State Warriors 139-119 on Friday. He was taking over for Chauncey Billups, who was arrested by the FBI on Thursday for his involvement in a betting scandal.
- Deni Avdija had 26 points and six assists. He dominated both inside and outside the arc in his 29 minutes while also being able to make a difference as a playmaker. His four makes from beyond the arc were especially noteworthy, and a positive sign for Portland after the veteran forward did not convert on either of his six three-point attempts in the season opener.
- Nevertheless, the performance in the win over Golden State was encouraging and marked a second strong performance to begin the season for Avdija.
- Jerami Grant scored 22 points, Toumani Camara had 19, and Shaedon Sharpe added 17. Donovan Clingan had 14 points, Kris Murray scored 13, Jrue Holiday added 12 points and 11 assists, and Matisse Thybulle had 10 points.
They caught the Warriors on the second leg of a back-to-back and were able to rally around the circumstances of the team. Portland won 36 games last season and finished middle of the pack in defensive rating. They have a young core and will be a tough out for contenders in the West.

Clippers Earn First W
Playing in their home opener at the new Intuit Dome, the Clippers blew out the Phoenix Suns 129-102.
- James Harden scored 30 points and Kawhi Leonard added 27. The Clippers bounced back after a season-opening, 21-point loss at Utah, where they trailed by 37 points.
- Derrick Jones Jr. did not miss a shot in scoring 17 points, making five 3-pointers and another field goal. Harden made five 3-pointers, all nine of his free throws, and had seven rebounds and seven assists in leading the NBA's oldest team this season.
- The Clippers shot 55% from 3-point range. They led by as many as 32 points.
Harden and Kawhi Leonard were responsible for 57 of LA's 129 points in the blowout, and the duo seems to be in sync. Harden only missed four shots in the game and hit five three-pointers in the win, bringing his total to seven beyond the arc over the first two games. The Clippers emptied the bench after the game was well in hand, so the fact that Harden managed this total with only 28 minutes of work was very impressive. Games like this are perfect for the aging Clippers, giving Leonard and Harden plenty of rest.
Portland Trail Blazers vs. Los Angeles Clippers Game Pick
Spread Pick for Blazers vs. Clippers
- Los Angeles Clippers ATS (4 units)
The Clippers looked embarrassing in their opening night game, getting blown out of the stadium by the Utah Jazz. They followed that up with an impressive home win over the Phoenix Suns. The most important fact of that game was Leonard and Harden playing 28 minutes each and sitting for most of the fourth quarter. That will leave them fresh for this game against the young Blazers. Last year, Los Angeles finished third in defensive rating. Only one team turned it over more than Portland last year, and they have lost 10 of their last 11 road games against LA. Take the Clippers to win and cover.
OVER/UNDER PICK for Trail Blazers vs. Clippers
- UNDER (4 units)
The veteran Clippers will deploy a methodical approach to the game this year, and it would not be surprising if they finished near the bottom of the NBA in pace of play, like they finished last season. Portland finished in the middle of the pack, but they still do not have their point guard available. The total has gone under in 12 of Portland’s last 18 games facing Pacific Division foes. I like the Clippers to suffocate Portland defensively and slow the game down. Take the under here.
