Kings vs Jazz Game Preview and Analysis

This is a really weird game to handicap, and I mean that in the most honest bettor way possible.

These teams have already played twice this season and they split the first two meetings, with each team winning on its home court. That tells me this matchup has been pretty close in terms of actual basketball, even if the standings might not always reflect it.

Jazz

Utah is the most difficult team in the NBA to trust late right now. The Jazz have made it very clear what their intentions are moving forward, and it is not about winning fourth quarters.

Over the last two weeks, Utah has pulled Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr., and other top players in the fourth quarter of every game. That is not speculation. It is something that has happened repeatedly, and Will Hardy basically confirmed it on Monday.

When asked when he planned on putting Markkanen or Jackson Jr. back on the court against Miami on Monday, Hardy responded, “I wasn’t.”

So why am I still leaning Utah?

Because even with all of that, the Jazz have covered five straight spreads. That is not normal. That tells me Utah is playing hard early, building leads, and then surviving late even with strange lineups. It is risky, but it is still cashing.

The other angle I do not want to ignore is the schedule. Utah is on the front end of a back-to-back, and the Jazz will host Portland on Thursday. That adds even more risk of another late-game “pull the plug” situation if Utah gets ahead.

Kings

Sacramento has no excuses right now. The Kings have lost 13 straight games. That is the type of streak that breaks teams mentally, and it also creates a major problem for bettors: you cannot trust them to respond, even when the number looks attractive.

On Monday, Sacramento lost by 26 points to New Orleans. That is not just losing. That is getting blown off the floor.

The injury situation is also brutal. Russell Westbrook, Zach LaVine, Malik Monk, Domantas Sabonis, De’Andre Hunter, and Keegan Murray have all been ruled out for Sacramento.

That is basically the entire identity of the team. When you take that many creators and scorers off the floor, it is hard to see how Sacramento keeps pace for four quarters, even against a team like Utah.

SAC

The Kings do have one thing working for them: Utah’s fourth-quarter behavior makes it possible for underdogs to sneak in the back door. That is why I am not recommending a full-game spread bet with confidence.

If Utah goes up 15 in the third quarter, I have to assume there is a real chance the Jazz sit their best players and let the game get weird.

UTA

From a pure betting standpoint, I am reading the market like this:

Public betting is heavily tilted toward Utah. The spread tickets and money are sitting in the 93% to 100% range in the screen grabs. That is extreme.

Normally, I do not love being on the same side as the public. But Sacramento’s injury list is so long that it explains why the market is one-way.

Key Injuries and Notes - SAC and UTA

  • Elijah Harkless is out for Utah.
  • Utah has pulled Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr., and other top players in the fourth quarter of every game over the last two weeks.
  • Utah head coach Will Hardy said on Monday that he was not planning on putting Markkanen or Jackson Jr. back on the court late.
