Spurs finally stopped
The San Antonio Spurs (5-1) finally went down to their first loss of the 2025-26 NBA season on Sunday when they were stopped 130-118 by the Suns in Phoenix. After an incredible start to the campaign, Victor Wembanyama, for once, looked mortal as Phoenix did a great job in stifling the giant center. Wemby was held to just nine points and made six turnovers while shooting 4-14 from the field. Through the first five games, he had averaged 30.2 points and 14.6 rebounds, and he still leads the NBA with a massive 4.7 blocks per game so far.
The Spurs were also hurt by a quiet night from Devin Vassell, who shot 2-9 from the field and 0-6 from deep to pick up four points in the game. There was further bad news when rookie Dylan Harper, who has been a spark in this Spurs team in the first couple of weeks, limped out against Phoenix. Harper has avoided serious injury but will still face several weeks out with a calf strain. This year's second overall Draft pick was averaging 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists from 23.3 minutes of court time in his first NBA season. He joins De'Aaron Fox (hamstring), Jeremy Sochan (wrist), and Lukas Kornet (ankle) on a lengthy Spurs injury report. San Antonio currently sits second in the Western Conference behind reigning NBA champions the Thunder.

Lakers pull out big win without stars
The Los Angeles Lakers (5-2) pulled out a big win on Monday without the dominant pairing of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. A double-double from Deandre Ayton (29 pts, 10 rebs, 73.7% FG%) led the Lakers to a 123-115 win over Portland, while Nick Smith Jr. also stepped up to shoot 5-6 from 3-point range off the bench for a 25-point haul. Doncic was rested for that game after putting up 39 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists against the Grizzlies over the weekend on his return after missing three games. He averages 45.3 ppg, 11.7 rebounds, and 7.7 assists so far for the Lakers as he begins his first full season on the West Coast.
Reaves sat on Monday due to groin soreness. He ranks fifth among qualified NBA players with 31.1 ppg, while his mark of 9.3 assists per game places him fifth. He is currently marked questionable for Wednesday's game but is expected to make it back. LeBron James (back), Gabe Vincent (ankle), Maxi Kleber (oblique) and Adou Thiero (knee) are all confirmed absentees against the Spurs.
Spurs vs. Lakers Pick
Spurs vs. Lakers Spread Pick
- Spurs to cover (4 Units)
Even with a couple of pressing injury concerns, I like Wemby and the Spurs to come back strong on Wednesday and cover in LA. The Spurs should not have the same offensive troubles that they suffered against Phoenix, with the Lakers failing to stand out so far this year without the ball. They rank 19th in the NBA with an effective FG% against of 55%. The Spurs also have the chance to dominate under the glass: they place sixth among NBA teams with 58.7 rebounds per game compared to the Lakers' 49.5 (27th in NBA). The Spurs also rank third with 4.3 extra scoring chances per game, while the Lakers are down in 28th with -4.6 extra scoring chances per game.
Take the Spurs.
Spurs vs. Lakers Over/Under Pick
- Under (5 Units)
This Spurs defense is formidable with Wembanyama at its heart, and it should keep both Doncic and Reaves under wraps and ensure this game stays on the under. Sunday's loss to Phoenix was only the second time this year San Antonio has given up 110 points or more. It is 2-4 on the over and gives up an average of 108.2 ppg (best in NBA) and 39.7 points in the paint, the second-best mark in the league. The Lakers have been deadly accurate but they don't shoot enough, ranking dead last with 82.2 FGA/G. An elevated turnover rate of 14.5% also hurts LA's points-scoring potential against an elite defense. San Antonio is 24th in the NBA on pace of play with 102.7 possessions per game, just behind the Lakers, who average 103.5 possessions per game.
Take the under.
