Wemby, Spurs Off to a Hot Start

The San Antonio Spurs roll into this contest against the Phoenix Suns without any blemishes on their undefeated start. Three nights prior, they used an explosive third quarter and survived a 107-101 road win over the Miami Heat. They have won five in a row to open the year.

  • Victor Wembanyama had 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, and five blocked shots. San Antonio won four straight to open a season on three previous occasions, most recently in 2017. The Spurs, Heat, and Sacramento Kings were the only franchises never to open a season 5-0.
  • San Antonio had six players score in double figures, including 21 points from Stephon Castle. Castle added eight assists and six rebounds, and Devin Vassell added 17 points.
  • Wembanyama has had at least one block in 90 straight games, the fourth-longest streak in NBA history.

De'Aaron Fox (hamstring) is close to returning, which will take some pressure off of Castle. He has been performing extremely well while assuming Fox's role, and the change should be easy, as he will move over to the off-guard position once Fox makes his debut. Castle posted a season-high eight assists during the win, and he also collected four steals.

Suns Blow Out the Jazz

The Phoenix Suns earned a much-needed home win Friday night, snapping a four-game losing streak in a 118-96 blowout victory over the Utah Jazz. Devin Booker scored 36 points and had nine assists, and Grayson Allen scored 14 points. Ryan Dunn had 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Suns took command in the first quarter, outscoring the Jazz 37-17 in the frame. Phoenix led 54-40 by halftime and slowly expanded the lead in the second half.

  • Booker made his presence felt early with 12 points in the first quarter to help the Suns jump out to a 20-point lead, and he matched that total in the third frame to maintain Phoenix's cushion.
  • Booker has scored at least 31 points in five of the first six games of the regular season while also dishing out at least seven dimes in four of those contests. Booker has been the Suns' clear focal point on offense following the offseason trade of Kevin Durant to the Rockets, and the former should continue to see a high usage for as long as Jalen Green (hamstring) is sidelined. Dillon Brooks (groin) is also likely out again for this game. They are 2-4 on the young season.

Spurs vs. Suns Game Pick

Spread Pick for Spurs vs. Suns

  • San Antonio Spurs ATS (5 units)

Victor Wembanyama has been an extraordinary force to be reckoned with for the Spurs, and he is on a war path to open the year. All five of his stat lines have been double-doubles, and he recorded a season-high 18 rebounds Thursday evening. Phoenix is small up front, with Mark Williams as its only line of defense. He has been playing well, but he will be no match for Wemby out on the perimeter, where he has done some serious damage this season. They look to be a major player in the Western Conference this season. Take the Spurs to win and cover.

OVER/UNDER PICK for Spurs vs. Suns

  • UNDER (4 units)

San Antonio has a unique ability to control the glass, and that unique tool is called Victor Wembanyama. Through five games, they lead the NBA in rebounding percentage. Without Fox in the lineup, they are relying on a lot more half-court sets, and as a result, their pace of play is among the lowest in the NBA. That will continue as long as Fox is sidelined. Phoenix is 26th in field goal percentage, and San Antonio is holding teams to the lowest two-point shooting percentage in the league. Take the under with confidence.
