Washington (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) lost their season opener in Milwaukee on Wednesday, 133-120, as +10 underdogs. Early deficit too much for Wizards

The Wizards got themselves behind the eight ball early in their season opener against the Bucks, as the offense was slow to get going, scoring 23 first-quarter points and playing catch-up the rest of the way. They shot 46.9% from the field and 40.5% from three-point range, hitting 17 threes. Khris Middleton scored a team-high 23 points against his former team. The veteran forward shot 9-14 from the field, with six rebounds and four assists. The bench chipped in with 46 points, Tre Johnson leading that group with 17 points and four threes. Washington coughed up 13 turnovers in Milwaukee.

The defense was even more catatonic than the offense on Wednesday, allowing 40 points in the first quarter and at least 29 in each of the next three. Milwaukee shot 51% against them and the Wiz forced just eight turnovers from them for one measly point. Their lone advantage came down low where they won the rebound battle, 56-46. Second-year center Alex Sarr wiped 11 rebounds off the boards and added 10 points for his first double-double of the season. He had 10 double-doubles as a rookie. Kyshawn George accounted for half of the team’s four blocks and had nine rebounds, four assists and 21 points

Team notes

  • CJ McCollum, who averaged 3.1 threes per game last season, was 0-for-6 from long distance on Wednesday.
  • Cam Whitmore came off the bench and his six field goals, third most on the team, for 14 points, complemented by five rebounds.
  • The team had only 23 assists against Milwaukee, and George has a team-high four dimes.

Mavericks fail in Battle of Texas

Against the quickly rising Spurs, the Mavericks barely stood a chance in their season opener as the Cooper Flagg era officially got underway for the franchise. The team was able to gain a 29-28 lead after the first quarter, but scored 22 points or less in each subsequent quarter of play. Flagg, the first overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, put in 32 minutes and recorded a double-double in his NBA debut, grabbing 10 boards while scoring 10 points on 4-13 shooting. The team hit nine threes in the loss, but shot just 37.3% overall from the field. They did empty the bench but only five players contributed a combined 29 points, with Max Christie scoring nine on three threes.

The Dallas defense allowed 28 points in the first quarter, then at least 32 points in each subsequent quarter as San Antonio shot 57.5% against them. The Mavs lost the rebound battle, 50-37, and they turned the ball over 16 times, leading to 19 Spurs’ points. Dallas recorded five steals and three blocks. Anthony Davis snagged a team-high 13 rebounds and added 22 points on 7-22 shooting from the field for a double-double. The center also had two steals and a block in the loss.

Team notes

  • Klay Thompson shot 4-13 from the field and 1-5 from three-point range, scoring 10 points with two boards and an assist against the Spurs.
  • J. Washington matched Davis with seven made field goals as he scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds.
  • The Mavs hit only six field goals and shot 28.6% in the second quarter on Wednesday.

Wizards vs. Mavericks Pick

Spread Pick for Wizards vs. Mavericks

  • Washington +11.5 (5 units)

In two meetings last season, it was also Dallas, as they won both meetings by an average of 29 points per game. While both sides suffered a loss in their season openers, the Wizards were a bit closer in their pursuit of a win. Both also played against quality postseason contenders. The Mavs actually looked like they were going to make a big bang on Wednesday night, but then fell completely apart after the first quarter. They showed that their lack of scorers is really going to come to the forefront this season. Washington had the reverse happen on opening night as they scored 97 points over the last three quarters against Milwaukee. The Wizards did well shooting the three, while Dallas allowed San Antonio to shoot 40% from long distance, so the visitors can take over if they are on target once again. They should also have a rebound on the glass, despite the best efforts of Davis. Washington is 6-3 ATS in the last nine games between these two.

Take the Wizards getting the points.

Over/Under Pick for Wizards vs. Mavericks

  • Over 228.5 (5 units)

Last season, these teams averaged a combined 238 points in their two games. This is a considerably high total given that Dallas is coming off a 92-point performance in their season opener. However, it’s justified because we can for sure expect them to do a whole lot more in this one. Granted, they did play at home in their opener, where they are once again, but they also played stiffer competition than they will on Friday. Versus Washington, Dallas will be able to find more scorers to contribute. Washington had just an early lapse, scoring 23 points in the first quarter before finishing with 120 on the night. They should be able to run over the Dallas defense. The over is 8-2 in the last ten games between the two.

Take the over.
