New York Yankees vs Minnesota Twins Pick and Prediction September 16th, 2025
The Yankees look to overtake the Blue Jays for the top spot in the AL East as they face the Twins on Tuesday at 7:40 p.m. EST in Target Field. Check out our New York Yankees vs Minnesota Twins pick and prediction here!
New York is currently 2nd in the AL East with an 83-67 record, five games behind the Blue Jays. They are also 5-5 in their last 10, including two losses in a row heading into this contest. On the bright side, they still hold the top wild card spot in the American League. Meanwhile, the Twins are looking to turn the page on the 2025 season and propel themselves in 2026. Currently, they have a 66-84 record, good for 4th in the AL Central ahead of the White Sox. Can the Yankees keep their pace on the Blue Jays?

Yankees Yearning for More
New York felt their chances at a division crown slip away just a tad bit more with their 7-0 defeat to the Twins. The Yankees had two total hits all game, but Aaron Judge had three walks, and Trent Grisham had two walks. Nobody else could do much of anything for New York on offense. Carlos Rodon had a solid start with two runs surrendered in six innings pitched, but the bullpen faltered, which led to an easy win for Minnesota.
New York made several minor moves to improve their depth at the trade deadline. Their first move was acquiring Ryan McMahon from the Rockies for Josh Grosz and Griffin Herring. Amed Rosario was then acquired from the Nationals for Clayton Beeter and Browm Martinez. Carlos Carrasco was sent to the Braves for cash and Austin Slater was traded from the White Sox to the Yankees in exchange for Gage Ziehl. New York then addressed the bullpen with a trade with San Francisco, getting Camilo Doval for Jesus Rodriguez, Trystan Vrieling, Parks Harber, and Carlos De La Rosa. Jake Bird was then acquired from Colorado for Roc Riggio and Ben Shields. Jose Caballero was traded from Tampa to New York for Everson Pereira and future considerations. and David Bednar was sent from Pittsburgh to New York for Rafael Flores, Edgleen Perez, and Brian Sanchez. Finally, Oswald Peraza was sent to the Angels for Wilberson De Pena and future considerations. Many moves were made, but until we see the Yankees capitalize in October, this is to be considered a serious risk.
Rookie Cam Schlittler will make a crucial start for the Yankees in this upcoming contest. Through 11 starts and 56 innings pitched, the righty has 63 strikeouts, a 1.32 WHIP, and a 3.05 ERA. In his 11 starts this year, he has given up more than three runs only once despite starting in June.

Minnesota Making Moves for 2026
Minnesota got the best of the Yankees for once, this time winning by a score of 7-0. Austin Martin had a team-high four RBI and Brooks Lee had a homer with two RBI on the day. Luke Keaschall chipped in the other RBI and Simeon Woods Richardson had a terrific start, giving up only two hits and no runs through an even six innings pitched. The bullpen locked it down from there to secure a decisive win.
The Twins went through a massive sell-off this trade deadline, and over 1/3 of their starting roster departed from the team. Chris Paddack was the first casualty, as he was sent to Detroit for Randy Dobnak and Enrique Jimenez. Later on, Jhoan Duran was traded to Philadelphia for Eduardo Tait and Mick Abel. The day of the trading deadline was the most hectic for the Twins, as they traded seven players. Will Castro went to the Cubs for Sam Armstrong and Ryan Gallagher. Griffin Jax went to Tampa for Taj Bradley. Carlos Correa was sent back to Houston for Matt Mikulski. Harrison Bader was shipped to Philadelphia for Geremy Villoria and Hendry Mendez. Louis Varland and Ty France were sent to Toronto for Alan Roden and Kendry Rojas. Brock Stewart was traded to the Dodgers for James Outman. Finally, Danny Coulombe was sent to the Rangers for Garrett Horn. The Twins were not really a contender, so I respect the Twins and their acceptance of that fact by trading as much as they could. How they rebuild will be a different story, though.
Zebby Matthews will get the nod as the starter on Tuesday. His numbers this year are at a 5.06 ERA and a 4-5 record through 14 starts. He has a 1.46 WHIP with 80strikeouts in 69.1 innings pitched. While he started out poorly in the month of May, he had one great start in June before getting injured. He came back in July and pitched poorly again before getting a little better this month. Matthews is hoping to make a statement with this start, proving he can be in the rotation for next year.
Yankees vs Twins Pick
Spread Pick for Yankees vs Twins
- Yankees -1.5 (-190)
The Yankees have had their way with the Twins in recent memory. New York is a playoff-caliber team searching for a way to overtake Toronto for the division, while Minnesota has virtually nothing to play for in this one. The Yankees have won eight of their last ten against them and they will want to score more than zero runs like they did in the previous game. Schlittler has been more in control this year compared to Matthews, so I trust the Yankees to get their revenge in this game.
Over/Under Pick for Yankees vs Twins
- Over
It's hard to make a pick for the total when it hasn't been posted yet, but I'm assuming the total will be less than nine. Therefore, I like taking the over in this one. While Schlittler has been a quality spot starter all year, he has shown a crack in the armor with his worst performance on the 5th of September. Additionally, I simply cannot trust Zebby Matthews to keep the game at a low total. The Yankees will be swinging away to rebound from their shutout loss and Minnesota should do just enough against a rookie pitcher to reach the over here.
