Falcons’ Defense Looking Reliable

The Falcons are coming off a win last Sunday versus the Vikings with a final score of 22-6. This would be the first win of the season for the Falcons as they now head on the road for their first road conference matchup.

Atlanta has struggled to put up points so far this season, ranking 22nd in points scored despite being 11th in overall yards. While the Falcons are consistent in generating yardage thanks to their run gam,e sitting fourth overall in both rushing yards and rushing attempts, it has not been enough as they fail to finish their drives with points. To make up for this, the Falcons’ defense has been able to hold back the opposition from running too far away with the game, which gives Atlanta a chance to tie or win the game with only one scoring drive needed. The Falcons so far this season are second overall in points and yards allowed, allowing only 14.5 points per game.

Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is the starting quarterback for the Falcons.

Michael Penix Jr.:

  • has a passer rating of 88.9 with 433 yards and 1 touchdown in 2 games this season.
  • had a passer rating of 78.9 with 775 yards, 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 5 games in his rookie season in 2024.
  • has a passer rating of 88.9 with 312 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception in 1 game versus the Panthers in his career.

CB A.J. Terrell Jr. (hamstring) is considered week-to-week.

Panthers Continue To Struggle

The Panthers picked up another loss last week against the Cardinals with a final score of 27-22. This would be the second loss for the Panthers this season as they have yet to grab a win so far. Carolina will be hosting their home opener on Sunday against the Falcons and looks to turn their season around in front of a home crowd.

Carolina is suffering from similar issues they had last season, which are unreliability on both the offense and defense. Carolina is 29th this season in points scoring, with only 32 points across their first two games. This is mostly due to their poor running game, which sits 28th in rushing yards and 24th in rushing yards per carry at 3.7. The Panthers have been unable to create a consistent run game, which has been a detriment to their offense, making them seem one-note, only using the pass. The same issues are also on their defense as the Panthers sit 22nd in points allowed, allowing 53 points in their first two games. Much like their offense, the Panthers’ defense struggles with the run, allowing the 25th most rushing yards of any team this season and allowing the 27th most yards per carry at 5.2.

Quarterback Bryce Young hopes to find success in his third season as the starting quarterback for the Panthers.

Bryce Young:

  • has a passer rating of 74.4 with 482 yards, 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 2 games this season.
  • had a passer rating of 82.2 with 2,403 yards, 15 touchdowns and 9 interceptions in 14 games in 2024.
  • has a passer rating of 86.5 with 564 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in 3 games versus the Falcons in his career.

On the injury front, Edge Patrick Jones II (hamstring) and DT Tershawn Wharton (hamstring) are questionable.

Falcons vs. Panthers Prediction and Picks

Spread Pick for Falcons vs. Panthers

  • Falcons -5.5 (-105 ) (5 units)

The Falcons have a 5-2 record against the spread in their last seven games versus the Panthers on the road. Last season, the Panthers were a six-point underdog at home in their first meeting against the Falcons, and Atlanta was able to find an easy cover with a final score of 38-20. The Falcons' strongest weapon on offense is the strongest weakness for the Panthers which is the run game. Atlanta is going to have a strong game on Sunday, led by running back Bijan Robinson, as they generate consistent points thanks to their run game, but maintain the Panthers’ offense thanks to their reliable defense.

Over/Under Pick for Falcons vs. Panthers

  • Under 43.5 (-105 ) (4 units)

The Panthers have an over/under record of 3-7 in their last ten games against the Falcons at home. The Falcons’ defense is going to keep the Panthers’ offense in check and keep them from scoring many points. A key reason why I believe this game will go under is because of the Falcons' play style. Atlanta plays a slow ground game, which will eat up a lot of time especially as they struggle to produce many points on their drives. Even against a struggling Carolina defense, I have to look for a one-sided low low-scoring game.
