Texans vs Jaguars Prediction

The Cleveland Browns travel to Jacksonville to face the Jaguars on Sunday, September 13, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 PM ET. Cleveland begins the Todd Monken era with a veteran quarterback returning after missing the entire 2025 season, while Jacksonville enters with considerably higher expectations after another productive year from its established starter. The betting market reflects that difference: Jacksonville is currently favored by eight points with a total of 40.5. Be ready for the full NFL season with our free NFL picks.

Deshaun Watson Wins Cleveland's Quarterback Competition

There is no longer any uncertainty about Cleveland's Week 1 quarterback. Head coach Todd Monken officially named Deshaun Watson the starter after evaluating the competition throughout the offseason, training camp and preseason. Shedeur Sanders is listed second on Cleveland's current depth chart, with Taylen Green third.

Watson missed the final 10 games of 2024 and all of 2025 while recovering from Achilles injuries, making his return one of the biggest variables in this game. He started Cleveland's first preseason game and completed 11 of 15 passes for 126 yards. In his second preseason appearance, Watson completed 5 of 12 for 36 yards with an interception. Monken ultimately said Watson's full body of work gave Cleveland its best chance to move the football and score.

The Browns' offensive depth chart lists Quinshon Judkins as the starting running back, with Dylan Sampson behind him. Jerry Jeudy, Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion occupy the starting receiver spots, while Harold Fannin Jr. is listed first at tight end. Cleveland has talent around Watson, but putting everything together immediately under a new coaching staff and with a quarterback returning from such a lengthy absence is a significant challenge.

Cleveland does have defensive pieces capable of making Jacksonville uncomfortable. Jared Verse, Mason Graham, Carson Schwesinger, Quincy Williams, Tyson Campbell, Denzel Ward and Grant Delpit are among the starters on the current depth chart. Schwesinger enters his second season after winning AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, giving the Browns a young centerpiece in the middle of the defense.

Trevor Lawrence Gives Jacksonville the Established Advantage

Jacksonville enters with considerably more stability at quarterback behind Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence started all 17 games in 2025 and completed 341 of 560 passes for 4,007 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also provided substantial production as a runner, carrying 82 times for 359 yards and nine touchdowns. That gave him 38 combined passing and rushing touchdowns during one of the most productive seasons of his career.

Lawrence's mobility is particularly relevant against Cleveland's defensive front. He isn't simply a pocket passer who needs perfect protection; his nine rushing touchdowns last season show that Jacksonville can use him as another weapon near the goal line and in situations where coverage forces him away from his first read.

The Jaguars also have the advantage of continuity within Liam Coen's system. Rather than entering Week 1 trying to determine what their quarterback can physically handle after a lengthy rehabilitation, Jacksonville can build its plan around a starter coming off more than 4,000 passing yards.

There are still offensive-line issues worth watching. Starting right tackle Cole Van Lanen has been working his way back toward full health after a knee injury cost him the offseason program and the early portion of training camp. His availability and effectiveness matter against a Cleveland defense with enough front-seven talent to create pressure.

Cleveland Browns vs Jacksonville Jaguars Picks and Prediction

Pick: Jacksonville Jaguars -8

Eight points is a substantial Week 1 spread, but Jacksonville is still the preferred side. Lawrence enters after producing 4,007 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns and nine rushing scores last season, while Watson is preparing for his first regular-season appearance since 2024 after multiple Achilles injuries. Cleveland also enters under a new head coach and offensive system. The Browns' defense should keep them competitive for stretches, but Jacksonville has the enormous advantage in quarterback continuity and is playing at home. If Watson struggles to generate sustained drives, the Jaguars should eventually create separation. Take Jacksonville -8.

Pick: Under 40.5

The Under 40.5 is the preferred total. Cleveland's best chance of covering or winning involves its defense keeping the score manageable while Monken avoids asking Watson to immediately carry the offense in his first regular-season game after missing all of 2025. Jacksonville has the offensive advantage but doesn't necessarily need an aggressive shootout-style approach if its defense controls Cleveland. A result in the neighborhood of 24-13 or 27-10 fits the matchup and keeps the game below the current number. Take Under 40.5.

Final Picks: Jacksonville Jaguars -8 and Under 40.5
