By: Kim Smith Published 09/06/2026, 01:04 PM ET

The Denver Broncos travel to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, to face the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, September 14, in the opening Monday Night Football game of the 2026 season. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 PM ET with ABC and ESPN carrying the game. Denver enters as the defending AFC West champion after finishing 14-3 last season and ending Kansas City's nine-year run atop the division, while the Chiefs are trying to rebound from a stunning 6-11 campaign. Kansas City is currently favored by 2.5 points with a total of 43.5, while the Chiefs are around -144 on the moneyline and Denver is +122. Get ready for the NFL season with our free NFL picks.

Bo Nix Leads the Defending AFC West Champions

Bo Nix returns as Denver's unquestioned starting quarterback after throwing for 3,931 yards during the Broncos' 14-win season. Nix was protected exceptionally well, with Denver allowing only 23 sacks, and that combination helped Sean Payton's offense complement one of the league's best defenses.

There was an injury concern after Nix hurt his ankle during Denver's postseason run, but he is back atop the Broncos' 2026 depth chart and ready for the opener. Jarrett Stidham is listed behind him, with Sam Ehlinger third. Nix now enters his third NFL season with considerably different expectations than he faced as a rookie. Denver isn't simply trying to reach the postseason anymore; the Broncos are defending a division championship.

The supporting cast has also improved. Jaylen Waddle is preparing to make his Denver debut and joins Courtland Sutton and Marvin Mims Jr. atop the receiving depth chart. Sutton produced 1,017 receiving yards last season, and adding Waddle gives Nix another established target capable of creating separation and generating explosive plays. Evan Engram remains the starting tight end, while J.K. Dobbins is listed ahead of RJ Harvey in the backfield.

Denver's offensive line remains another major strength. Garett Bolles, Ben Powers, Luke Wattenberg, Quinn Meinerz and Mike McGlinchey are listed across the starting five. That continuity is particularly valuable in Arrowhead, where crowd noise can make communication and protection adjustments much more difficult.

Denver's Defense Could Be the Deciding Factor

The biggest reason to seriously consider the Broncos as an underdog is their defense. Denver recorded a franchise-record 68 sacks last season, leading the NFL in sacks for the second consecutive year. Nik Bonitto led the team with a career-high 14 sacks and 28 quarterback hits.

Bonitto isn't alone. Zach Allen, D.J. Jones, Malcolm Roach, Alex Singleton, Pat Surtain II, Riley Moss, Talanoa Hufanga and Brandon Jones are among the starters on Denver's current depth chart. Surtain gives Denver one of the league's premier coverage defenders behind a front capable of disrupting quarterbacks before routes fully develop.

That becomes especially significant considering the circumstances surrounding Mahomes. Denver doesn't have to speculate about whether he will be diminished, and Payton has explicitly said the Broncos are preparing for Mahomes at his best. But this would still be Mahomes' first regular-season game since suffering the serious knee injury last December.

Kansas City also has a developing concern at left tackle. Josh Simmons has been dealing with a back injury and missed practices leading into Week 1 preparation. If Simmons cannot play, Kansas City could be forced to use a replacement against a Denver pass rush that led the NFL with 68 sacks. That is one of the most important matchups to monitor before kickoff.

The Kansas City side of this handicap begins with Patrick Mahomes. He suffered torn ligaments in his left knee in December and underwent surgery on December 15, creating legitimate uncertainty throughout the offseason about whether he would be ready for Week 1.

His recovery has progressed better than initially expected. Mahomes participated with the first-team offense throughout training camp and has continued practicing without the Chiefs needing to regularly shut him down. Kansas City deliberately kept him out of preseason games, prioritizing his rehabilitation and preparation for Denver rather than exposing him to unnecessary contact.

The Chiefs have an experienced insurance policy in Justin Fields, who is listed second on the current depth chart, with rookie Garrett Nussmeier third. But all indications entering game week point toward Mahomes making his return Monday night.

Mahomes has plenty of familiar receiving options. Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy are listed as starters, while Travis Kelce remains the starting tight end. Rice returned to game action during the preseason after dealing with a knee procedure and recorded 53 receptions for 571 yards and five touchdowns in eight regular-season games last year.

Kansas City also added Kenneth Walker to its backfield. Walker is currently listed as the starting running back, giving Andy Reid another established offensive weapon as the Chiefs attempt to rebuild an offense around Mahomes.

Kansas City's Defense Gives the Chiefs a Chance to Control the Game

Kansas City's 6-11 record makes last season look disastrous — and from a win-loss standpoint, it was — but the defense wasn't nearly as poor as the record suggests. The Chiefs allowed 328 points, and their inability to consistently finish games was a larger issue than simply being overwhelmed defensively.

Chris Jones remains the centerpiece of the defensive front. George Karlaftis starts on the edge, while Nick Bolton and Drue Tranquill remain important pieces at linebacker. Kansas City also has L'Jarius Sneed back in the secondary, giving the Chiefs an experienced corner capable of taking difficult assignments.

The challenge is dealing with a Denver offense that has added Waddle without sacrificing Sutton or Mims. Kansas City can't devote all of its coverage resources toward one receiver, and Nix's protection last season demonstrated how difficult Denver can be to disrupt when its offensive line is functioning properly.

This is also a much different psychological situation than Denver faced against Kansas City for most of the previous decade. The Broncos swept the Chiefs last season and won the AFC West. Denver isn't entering Arrowhead simply hoping to survive Mahomes and Kansas City. It enters as the defending division champion trying to demonstrate that last year's shift in power wasn't temporary.

Denver Broncos vs Kansas City Chiefs Picks and Prediction

Pick: Denver Broncos +2.5

Kansas City at Arrowhead with Mahomes has traditionally been one of the NFL's most difficult teams to bet against, but the current circumstances make Denver +2.5 the preferred position. The Broncos went 14-3 last season, won the AFC West and swept Kansas City while building their success around Nix, an excellent offensive line and a defense that generated an NFL-best 68 sacks. Mahomes appears likely to play, but this will be his first regular-season action since major knee surgery, and the possible absence of Simmons at left tackle is particularly concerning against Bonitto and Denver's pass rush. Adding Waddle gives the Broncos another offensive weapon as well. Kansas City could absolutely win a close game at Arrowhead, but the Broncos are good enough to win outright. Take Denver +2.5.

Pick: Under 43.5

Under 43.5 is the preferred total. Denver's defense is the strongest unit in this matchup and has the pass rush and secondary necessary to make Mahomes work for points, particularly in his first game back from the knee injury. Kansas City's defense also remains capable of preventing Nix from simply controlling the game through the air. Denver has little reason to turn this into a track meet on the road when it can lean on its defense, offensive line and a controlled attack. Kansas City may take a similarly measured approach with Mahomes returning to game action. A final score somewhere around Denver 23-20 or Kansas City 21-20 fits the matchup, making Under 43.5 the play.

Final Picks: Denver Broncos +2.5 and Under 43.5
