By: Kim Smith Published 08/09/2026, 02:15 PM ET

The Los Angeles Rams visit the Kansas City Chiefs for an NFL preseason matchup at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday, August 15, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET, with NFL Network providing national coverage and KCAL carrying the game in Los Angeles. Kansas City is a 2.5-point favorite, Los Angeles is available at +2.5, and the total is set at 36.5. The Chiefs are priced around -137 on the moneyline, while the Rams are approximately +117. This matchup should be decided almost entirely by the reserve quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes is unlikely to participate while completing his recovery from knee surgery, and Matthew Stafford has traditionally been protected throughout the preseason under Sean McVay. Kansas City’s experienced rotation gives the home team an early handicapping advantage, while Los Angeles plans to give rookie Ty Simpson considerable work.

Los Angeles Begins Developing Its Rookie Quarterback

The Rams enter their tenth season under McVay after reaching the NFC Championship Game in 2025. Los Angeles has an established veteran roster with legitimate championship expectations, leaving little reason for McVay to expose Stafford or other important starters to unnecessary preseason contact.

Stafford should remain on the sideline Saturday. He has not attempted a preseason pass since joining the Rams in 2021, and that approach is unlikely to change. Los Angeles also held a joint practice with Dallas earlier in the week, giving the established players an opportunity to receive competitive work in a controlled environment.

Stetson Bennett IV has handled most of the second-team repetitions during training camp. He has extensive preseason experience, appearing in seven exhibition games and making six starts during his Rams career. Bennett has completed 121 of 195 preseason passes for 1,296 yards and eight touchdowns, making him a capable option if McVay elects to use him.

However, Bennett’s playing time has not been confirmed. His position as Stafford’s primary backup could encourage the Rams to protect him alongside the established starters. If Bennett does not participate, Simpson should handle most of the quarterback workload.

Simpson was selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft after starting only one full season at Alabama. He possesses considerable physical ability, but he is still learning one of the NFL’s more demanding offensive systems. McVay has confirmed that Simpson will play and wants the rookie to receive as many useful repetitions as possible during the preseason.

Matthew Caldwell could handle the remaining snaps if Bennett is held out or receives only a brief appearance. Caldwell is competing for a developmental position and has considerably less professional experience than Kansas City’s reserve quarterbacks.

The Rams should attempt to support Simpson with a productive rushing attack. Blake Corum and Jarquez Hunter have already shown regular-season ability, although Los Angeles may limit their participation. That would leave the later carries for younger backs competing to remain on the roster.

Kansas City Holds the Quarterback Experience Advantage

Kansas City enters its 14th season under Andy Reid after finishing 6-11 in 2025. The Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time during the Mahomes era and made several offseason changes, including the return of Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator.

Mahomes has fully participated in training camp after recovering from surgery to repair the ACL and LCL injuries he suffered last December. However, Reid has indicated that Mahomes is unlikely to play during the preseason. Protecting his health for the September opener is substantially more important than giving him exhibition repetitions.

Justin Fields should receive the first opportunity if Mahomes remains on the sideline. Fields joined Kansas City during the offseason and recently worked with the first-team offense. He brings extensive starting experience and a dangerous running dimension that can become particularly valuable in preseason games.

Fields is still learning Kansas City’s terminology, but Reid and Bieniemy can build a manageable game plan around his mobility. Designed movement, option concepts, and play-action passes should allow Fields to generate offense without requiring him to execute the entire regular-season playbook.

Rookie Garrett Nussmeier is expected to receive meaningful playing time behind Fields. The former LSU quarterback must adjust to the complexity of Reid’s offense, but he has already spent training camp learning behind Mahomes and Fields. Saturday provides his first opportunity to demonstrate his accuracy and decision-making against an NFL defense.

Chris Oladokun completes Kansas City’s quarterback group. He has spent several years developing within the organization and understands the terminology better than most third- or fourth-string preseason quarterbacks. That familiarity should help Kansas City continue operating efficiently during the second half.

The Chiefs also need to evaluate a reworked running-back room. Kenneth Walker III is unlikely to require a substantial preseason workload, leaving opportunities for Emmett Johnson, Brashard Smith, Jaydn Ott, and the other reserves. Kansas City can use the running game to protect its quarterbacks without completely sacrificing offensive production.

Los Angeles Rams vs Kansas City Chiefs Picks and Prediction

  • Pick: Kansas City Chiefs -2.5

Kansas City is the preferred side. The Chiefs should have a considerable quarterback-experience advantage if Los Angeles holds Stafford and Bennett out. Fields has made more than 50 regular-season starts and can create offense independently when reserve linemen struggle to maintain their protection.

Nussmeier remains inexperienced, but he enters a favorable situation behind Fields. Kansas City can give the rookie manageable possessions before turning the offense over to Oladokun, who has already spent multiple seasons learning Reid’s system. The Chiefs should therefore have a quarterback with either NFL starting experience or strong organizational familiarity on the field throughout the game.

Los Angeles is prioritizing Simpson’s development rather than the final result. Giving a rookie quarterback an extensive workload is valuable for the future, but it can create short-term mistakes. Simpson must handle NFL defensive speed while learning McVay’s terminology and working with reserve receivers and offensive linemen.

The Rams can remain competitive if Bennett plays a meaningful portion of the game. However, McVay’s uncertainty about using his primary backup makes Kansas City the more dependable selection. The Chiefs possess enough quarterback depth to win by at least a field goal at home.

  • Pick: Under 36.5

The under is the preferred total. Neither Stafford nor Mahomes is expected to play, removing the two quarterbacks most capable of producing sustained and efficient scoring drives. Both teams should also protect many established offensive starters following their recent postseason ambitions and injury concerns.

Kansas City’s quarterback depth provides a path to functional offense, but Fields and Nussmeier are still learning Bieniemy’s system. Reid can simplify their responsibilities by emphasizing the running game and shorter passes. That approach should produce manageable possessions while keeping the clock moving.

Los Angeles may become even more conservative while Simpson handles the offense. McVay needs to evaluate the rookie’s command, footwork, and decision-making without asking him to chase points. Protection mistakes, penalties, and mistimed routes could prevent promising possessions from reaching the end zone.

Kansas City should control the game through its quarterback experience and home-field advantage, but that does not require a high-scoring result. A final score in the high teens or low twenties for the Chiefs should be enough to cover while keeping the combined score beneath 37 points.

Final Score Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs 20, Los Angeles Rams 14
