Rams on right path

Coming off the bye week, there was no rust on the Rams as they won a third straight game to kick off November. Up by ten at halftime against the Saints, the defense pitched a second-half shutout, and the offense scored in all four quarters to keep them in the thick of the NFC West race.

They’ve scored at least 34 points in each of their last two games and three times this season. The Rams' scoring offense ranks eighth in the NFL with 26.1 points per game. They have the best passing offense in the league, averaging 258 yards per game. After back-to-back sub-200-yard games, Matthew Stafford went for 281 yards and 4 TDs against New Orleans. He is sixth in the league with 2,147 passing yards and first with 21 TDs, nine of which came in his last two efforts. L.A.’s run game is producing 111.9 yards per game, 18th in the NFL. Kyren Williams is 11th in the league with 586 rushing yards on 132 carries.

Defensively, the Rams are giving up 15.9 points per game, the second-best average in the league. Opponents are beating them for 302.9 total yards each week, 10th overall. They are allowing 203.1 yards through the air, but only 99.8 yards per game on the ground. Los Angeles is tied for third in the league with 27 sacks to go along with 5 interceptions. Byron Young is fourth in the NFL with 9 sacks, with 3.5 over his last three games. Nate Landman has a team-high 72 tackles with 1.5 sacks and 4 pass deflections.

49ers fighting through

Despite the ever-growing injury report, the 49ers have persevered to this point, though after their 3-0 SU start, they’ve alternated a loss with a win in every week since. In New York last week, the teams matched each other on the scoreboard each quarter except the second, when San Francisco outscored the Giants, 10-0.

The 34 points scored in their win last weekend were the highest offense output all season for a team averaging 21.6 points per game, 23rd in the NFL. In terms of total offense, the team averages 352.1 total yards, 10th in the league. Their passing attack ranks fifth, averaging 255 yards per game. While the team was trying to ramp Brock Purdy up in his recovery from a turf toe injury, he was still limited in practice this week. So, Mac Jones will remain under center, barring a miracle. The Niners' backup has thrown for 1,832 yards, 10 TDs and 5 INTs in seven games. San Francisco has the seventh-worst run game, averaging 97.1 yards per game. Christian McCaffrey is ninth in the league with 596 rushing yards and tied for second with 61 receptions.

The Niners' scoring defense ranks 10th in the NFL, allowing 20.9 points per game. Opponents are gaining 332.6 total yards against them each week. Versus the run, they are giving up 108.9 yards and against the pass, 223.7 yards per game. The team is tied for second-to-last in the league with just 11 sacks. Same for their lone interception, courtesy of Deommodore Lenoir. Bryce Huff leads the team with 4 tackles and 6 tackles for loss.

Rams vs. 49ers Picks

Spread Pick for Rams vs. 49ers

  • Los Angeles -4.5 (5 units)

San Francisco kicked a field goal in overtime to win the first meeting between these two back in early October. The Rams needed two fourth-quarter comebacks to force overtime in an offensive showcase that featured a combined 863 yards and 54 first downs. Given the personnel are pretty much the same, I think we’re in store for another barnburner, only this time, I think Los Angeles pulls their revenge. Stafford has been sensational in the last couple of weeks, completing 69.2% of his passes with 9 TD strikes and zero interceptions over two games. The Niners do not put any pressure on the opposing QB, and their defensive backfield is likely to keep Stafford’s streak of games without an interception intact. Los Angeles is 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings between the teams.

Take the Rams, giving the points.

Over/Under Pick for Rams vs. 49ers

  • Over 49.5 (5 units)

These two teams needed overtime to get to a combined 49 points in early October, but that game should have been a lot higher scoring, given the efforts of both offenses. Given that both teams have weak passing defenses, I would expect a lot more of that in the rematch, only this time, both sides will capitalize in the red zone. Los Angeles scored over 30 points in each of their last two games and has put up at least 26 points in five of eight games this season. San Francisco is coming off of their best scoring effort of the season. The over is 6-3 in the last nine games between the teams.

Take the over.
