Turnovers Help in First Win for Dolphins

In their last game, the Dolphins were at home in a 27-21 win over the New York Jets where they were outgained by over 100 yards; they forced three turnovers and did not commit any. The win was a costly one, as star WR Tyreke Hill suffered a gruesome knee injury and is out for the season. Tua Tagovailoa was 17/25 for 177 yards with two TD, De'Von Achane rushed for 99 yards, and Hill led the team with 67 receiving yards before going down. Miami covered as a 2.5-point favorite and they have covered the spread in the last two games while failing to do so in the first two games.

  • Looking at the stats, it is no surprise the Dolphins only have one win, as they only rank 22nd in the league in ppg and 26th in points against per game.
  • Tagovailoa (752 yards 7 TD 4 INT) did not play badly in the last game, but has drawn heat for his play on a 1-3 team, as he only ranks 27th in the league in QBR, which is not good for a player making $53 million per season.
  • Achane (246 yards 1 TD) has combined for 151 yards in the last two games after rushing for a total of 85 yards in the first two games and also ranks third on the team with 143 receiving yards.
  • The loss of Hill is, obviously, a big one, as Jaylen Waddle (185 yards 2 TD) is the only other WR with more than 47 yards receiving.
  • TE Darren Waller came out of retirement to catch two TD passes on Monday night. However, Waller has been limited in practice due to a hip issue.
  • Miami is 0-2 on the road and they will be facing a Carolina defense that ranks 10th against the run but only 23rd against the pass.

Besides Hill the Dolphins are not missing any other key players.

Not Quite the Same Defense for the Panthers

After shutting out the Atlanta Falcons for their first win of the season, the Panthers were not quite the same on defense in their last game in a bad 42-13 road loss to the New England Patriots. Carolina was down 28-6 at the half and they lost badly despite gaining more yards (326 yards to 307 yards) and they did not commit any turnovers. Bryce Young passed for 150 yards and a TD before being replaced by Andy Dalton, Chuba Hubbard rushed for 49 yards, and rookie and first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan led the way with 62 receiving yards. The Panthers failed to cover as a 5.5-point underdog, and they had covered the spread in the previous two games.

  • Carolina ranks 26th in the league in points per game and 18th in points against per game.
  • Young (753 yards 5 TD 3 INT) only ranks 26th in the NFL in QBR and has not passed for over 154 yards in three of the four games this season.
  • Hubbard (217 yards) suffered a calf injury in the last game and is questionable and Rico Dowdle is the second leading rusher with only 83 yards.
  • McMillan (278 yards) is the only player who has in triple digits in receiving yards.
  • Carolina will be up against a Miami team that ranks 20th in the league in defending the pass and third-to-last in defending the run.

Hubbard is the big injury concern and DL Tershawn Wharton (toe), who has one of Carolina’s only two sacks, is also questionable.

Miami Dolphins vs. Carolina Panthers Pick

Spread Pick for Dolphins vs. Panthers

  • Dolphins -1 (+4 Units)

Both of these teams are 1-3 and while the Dolphins won their last game, the Panthers were crushed. Each team has issues on both sides of the ball and Miami lost its star WR for the season in their last game. However, they still have explosive weapons in Archane and Waddle. Hubbard may not play, and that's a big loss for the Panthers. Carolina has faced Jacksonville, Arizona, Atlanta and New England. Not exactly a juggernaut of a schedule, and won just one of those games. Even without Hill, the Dolphins have more talent, so in terms of the Miami Dolphins vs. Carolina Panthers pick, the Dolphins will have the better offensive game, and that will propel them to a win in North Carolina.

Β

Over/Under Pick for Dolphins vs. Panthers

  • Over 44.5 (+4 Units)Β

The total has gone over for the last two games for these teams and that is the pick I am leaning towards in this game. The Panthers did have a shutout win in the game before the last one but gave up 42 points in the last game and have given up 26 points in three of their four games. The Dolphins had given up over 30 points in their first three games before giving up 21 in their last one, facing a weak Jets team. Both teams have issues on offense and defense, but with the issues on D both teams will put up a higher total, which is why the Over is the pick for this non-conference affair.
