Dolphins 1-5 after heartbreaking Chargers loss
The Miami Dolphins are 1-5 after an absolutely brutal loss to the Chargers in Week 6. This was a game the Dolphins had in hand–Tua Tagovailoa found a wide-open Darren Waller in the back corner of the endzone, with less than a minute to play, to put Miami up 27-26 after the extra point. The Chargers were left with only 39 seconds and one timeout to execute a game-winning field goal drive on the ensuing possession. As it turned out, that would be more than they needed to beat the Dolphins 29-27.
It's hard to single out the Dolphins' weakest link in that game. Their first offensive drive ended prematurely when Jaylen Waddle juggled a pass into the hands of Chargers safety Tony Jefferson. Another drive ended in the third quarter when cornerback Benjamin St. Juste picked off a pass thrown behind Devon Achane, who was asked to carry entirely too much of the Dolphins' offense on his shoulders. Riley Patterson missed a 57-yard field goal wide right in the second quarter, two plays after a 15-yard pass to Waller was called back on a holding penalty against center Aaron Brewer.

Perhaps worst of all was the failure of the Dolphins' defense to convert pressure into positive plays–they recorded one sack, on a day when the Chargers were starting Bobby Hart at right tackle, whom they'd promoted from the practice squad a day prior. Aside from several splash plays from cornerback Rasul Douglas in the first quarter, nearly all of the highlights involving the Dolphins' secondary were negative. None more so than their inability to tackle Chargers receiver Ladd McConkey on the 42-yard play that cost them the game.
The Dolphins' defense enters Week 7 at the top of the league in completion percentage allowed (74.9%), rushing yards allowed (1,011), and percentage of opposing plays that end in first downs (40.6%). If that doesn't get better, they won't win games regardless of what their offense does.
Browns' offense looks lost in trip to Pittsburgh
The Cleveland Browns went to Pittsburgh in Week 6, where they haven't won a regular-season game since 2003. That streak continued with the Browns' 23-9 loss last Sunday, marking their worst scoring output in a 1-5 season in which they have yet to score 20 points in a game.
Rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, a week after making his first career start against the Vikings, dropped back 58 times in this game. He completed 29 of 52 passes for 221 yards, completing 55.77% of his passes for 4.25 yards per attempt, and took six sacks on 17 pressures per the NFL. Receiver Jerry Jeudy led the team with 13 targets but only caught five for 43 yards–not counting a 22-yard catch in the second quarter that left tackle Cam Robinson voided with an illegal formation penalty. Things didn't look any better on the ground, where backs Quinshon Judkins, Jerome Ford, and Dylan Sampson combined for 65 yards on 17 carries.
The Browns' defense remains among the better units in the league, ranking ninth in passing yards allowed (1,192) and fourth in rushing yards allowed (478). They're only lacking in takeaways–they're one of seven teams with four or fewer turnovers forced through Week 5, and they're tied for 27th in the league in turnover differential at -4.
Tight end David Njoku (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game. Right tackle Jack Conklin (concussion), receiver Gage Larvadain (concussion), edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka (hip), and defensive tackles Mason Graham (knee) and Mike Hall Jr. (knee) are questionable.
Miami Dolphins vs. Cleveland Browns Pick
Spread Pick for Dolphins vs. Browns
- Dolphins +2.5 (-105) (4 Units)
For every negative thing that can be said about the Dolphins' performance in their most recent game, they didn't look nearly as adrift at sea as the Browns. Their offense has an identity, even if it doesn't show up consistently and isn't always enough to win. I wouldn't expect them to put up 30 against the Browns' defense, but I'd absolutely take them to outscore the Browns' offense. The Dolphins' defense had a rough day trying to convert pressure against Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert into sacks; they won't struggle nearly as much against anyone the Browns can put under center.
Over/Under Pick for Dolphins vs. Browns
- Over 36.0 (-110) (4 Units)
As bad as the Browns' offense looked last week–and every other week–the Team Total Over is still 2-4 in their games. It hit two weeks ago in their 21-17 loss to the Vikings, which they similarly went into with a pregame total line of 36.0 points. They should have an easier time finding points at home against the Dolphins than they did on the road against the Steelers, and they're hosting a Miami team that's hit the over in each of their last five games.
