Saints Continue To Lose

New Orleans is heading to Carolina after their loss last week to the Rams with a final score of 34-10. This is the fourth loss in a row for the Saints as they remain at the bottom of both their division and conference. New Orleans is heading into a bye week following their game against Carolina and would like to end it on a high note.

The Saints have been unable to generate much offense this season as they rank 30th in points and 21st in yards. The Saints have been a pass heavy team but do not have much reliability in their quarterbacks as they continue to shuffle them around. Rookie QB Tyler Shough had 176 yards passing with a TD and a pick in their loss to the Rams. He'll get the rest of the season to audition for next season. What has struggled just as much as their offense has been their defense allowing the sixth most points in the league. The run defense for the Saints has been the largest problem, ranking 27th in rushing yards allowed and last in attempts against them.

Wide Receiver Chris Olave has attempted to help his team out generating 62.2 yards per game and bringing in three touchdowns across his nine games played. Olave leads the team in targets and receptions but it has not been enough to help out the offense in countering their poor defending.

Panthers Live And Die By Run Game

Carolina is returning home after their win last week against the Packers with a final score of 16-13. This is the fourth win in the last five weeks for the Panthers. Carolina is slowly climbing their way to the top of their division and if they continue down the route they are on, they may find a wild card spot by the end of the season.

The Panthers have not been able to reliably get points in their games as they sit 25th in scoring. However this is due to their lack of pass game sitting 28th in passing yards and 30th in yards per reception at 6.0. With the Panthers’ playstyle the clock burns faster and gives them less scoring opportunities and chances to drive down field. Carolina is fourth this season in rushing yards and are second in attempts per game. The Panthers have adopted a run style offense which has suited them but is it sustainable for the remainder of the season.

Running back Rico Dowdle has been leading the offense with his five touchdowns this season and leading the team in rushing yards with 735 on the season. In his last game we saw the full extent of how Dowdle can carry this offense on his back as he had 25 carries for 130 yards and two touchdowns against the Packers. Unfortunately he alone may not be enough to drive this team to the post season as their defense continues to struggle ranking 21st overall in points allowed.

Key Injuries and Analysis:

Saints:

Starting OT Taliese Fuaga(ankle) is out.

Starting DT Bryan Bresee (back) is questionable

Starting RB Alvin Kamara (ankle) is questionable.

Panthers:

WR Tetairoa McMillan (hamstring) is questionable.

OG Chandler Zavala (knee) is out.

Saints versus Panthers Picks and Prediction

Spread Pick for Saints vs. Panthers

  • Panthers -5.5 (-108) (5 units)

The Panthers are 3-1 against the spread at home this season. The Saints are 2-7 against the spread this season. New Orleans may be missing a key player in Alvin Kamara for this game who has led the team in rushing yards and has helped the offense stay competitive in most of their games this season. Carolina has thrived on the run game and is going up against the Saints who have struggled defending against the run game more than anything this season. We should expect to see a one sided game with Rico Dowdle generating plenty of yards against New Orleans.

Over/Under Pick for Saints versus Panthers

  • Under 39.5 (-108) ( 4 units)

The Saints have an over/under record of 3-7 in their last ten games versus the Panthers. The Saints also have an over/under record of 3-6 this season. While both defenses have struggled this season, I do not believe either offense will be able to take advantage of the poor defending in front of them. Carolina will thrive at the run game but this will only take the clock down more and as a result should lead us to a lower scoring game.
