Jets' offense looks lost in seventh straight loss
The New York Jets are still looking for their first win of the 2025 season, heading into Week 8 at 0-7. They're coming off a 13-6 loss against the Carolina Panthers that was every bit as close and painfully slow as the score would indicate.
Offensively, the team lacked a focal point with WR Garrett Wilson (knee) out of the lineup. Justin Fields completed 6 of 12 passes for only 46 yards–he missed a play in the first half after taking a late hit on a slide, but was benched in the second half for unrelated reasons. Tyrod Taylor finished the game 10 of 22 for 126 yards, matching Fields' three sacks taken while adding two interceptions. Taylor is expected to start this week over Fields, though head coach Aaron Glenn has yet to officially name a starter as of Friday afternoon. The problem? Taylor has not been medically cleared due to being limited in practice due to a knee injury.

Breece Hall led the team on the ground with only 38 yards on 11 carries–the group went a combined 81 yards on 20 rushing attempts, none of which went for more than eight yards. The defense was generally solid but had a few notable gaffes, starting with the 26-yard screen pass they allowed to the Panthers' Chuba Hubbard at the end of the first half–none of Hubbard's four lead blockers ended up having to block on the play. Carolina scored the game's lone touchdown on the next play, then opened the third quarter with a field goal drive that started on the Jets' 49-yard line after a huge kickoff return.
Wilson has yet to return to practice and is joined on the injury report by Taylor (knee), Hall (knee), receiver Josh Reynolds (hip), tight end Mason Taylor (quadriceps), star cornerback Sauce Gardner (concussion), and several others. Wilson and Gardner are two of six players who've already been ruled out. Head coach Aaron Glenn has been mum on whether Fields or Taylor will start against Cincinnati.
Bengals alive again after electric Steelers win
The Cincinnati Bengals got an early return on their Joe Flacco gambit last Thursday, beating the Steelers 33-31 to secure their first win of the season since losing Joe Burrow to a turf toe injury. They're up to 3-4 this season, second in the AFC North and a game-and-a-half behind the Steelers, who they'll play again in a couple of weeks.
Flacco–a week after arriving in Cincinnati and four days after starting against the Packers for the team's Week 6 game–completed 31 of 47 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns. Ja'Marr Chase caught 16 of those passes for 161 yards, including the team's first touchdown of the game near the end of the second quarter. He caught the team's first touchdown of the game in isolated coverage against Jalen Ramsey, a play after having a would-be touchdown catch ruled incomplete during review. The Steelers' ensuing drive ended immediately with Jordan Battle picking off Aaron Rodgers on an ill-advised deep shot, and the Bengals were back in the endzone after a 37-yard run from Chase Brown and a 29-yard strike to Tee Higgins. Brown finished the game with 108 yards on the ground after failing to notch 50 through any of the team's first six games, despite only carrying the ball 11 times. Higgins nearly recorded a second touchdown catch at the end of the fourth quarter, but passed it up to let the Bengals run the remaining clock and kick a game-winning field goal.
Trey Hendrickson, the team's star defensive end, is listed as questionable on the team's injury report with a hip injury–he missed the win against the Steelers and didn't participate in Friday's practice after being limited on Wednesday and Thursday. The only other starter on the injury report is DT B.J. Hill, who took two rest days during the week and doesn't have an injury designation.
Jets vs. Bengals Pick
Spread Pick for Jets vs. Bengals
- Bengals -6.0 (-110) (5 Units)
The Bengals are 2-0 against the spread since Flacco arrived two weeks ago, and are coming off a season-high 33 points in their win against the Steelers. They'll be hosting a Jets defense that would've likely been overmatched against Chase and Higgins when fully healthy; they'll be vastly overmatched with Gardner sidelined. Whether it's Taylor or Fields, the Jets are very limited on offense. The Jets have scored a combined 17 points in their last two games–they've played competent offense this season with Wilson on the field, but it's hard to picture them finding that gear again without him.
Over/Under Pick for Jets vs. Bengals
- Under 44.5 (-110) (4 Units)
The Bengals' high-scoring game against the Steelers was a product of two things: necessity and a pair of turnovers that the Bengals rapidly turned into ten points. Even if this Jets defense doesn't do much to impede them, Flacco probably won't have to throw 47 passes to keep up with the Jets' offense. The Jets' 13-6 loss to the Panthers was preceded by a 13-11 loss to the Broncos–two games that fell short of the point total without much suspense. I wouldn't bet on a sudden scoring outburst here.
