Smith's 2025 season included 3,025 passing yards in his Sunday appearances, with 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions across those games. His return gives New York an experienced quarterback rather than asking another young passer to develop while the rest of the roster tries to become competitive.

Breece Hall remains one of the most important pieces of the offense and is expected to be available for Week 1 after dealing with a groin injury. Garrett Wilson gives Smith an established receiving option, while the offensive line includes two young tackles in Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou who will be critical to keeping Tennessee's defensive front away from Smith.

The Jets also made significant changes defensively after allowing 503 points last season, the most in the league. Cam Ward remains the centerpiece of Tennessee's rebuild after starting all 17 games as a rookie. Ward completed 323 of 540 passes for 3,169 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns. There were encouraging moments, but the Titans went 3-14 and Ward was sacked 55 times.

The positive is that Ward protected the football reasonably well for a rookie asked to carry a struggling offense. Seven interceptions across 540 attempts is encouraging, and he showed improvement late in the year, throwing eight touchdown passes against one interception during December. The next step is turning that development into more explosive production.

Tony Pollard remains a major piece of Tennessee's offense and worked with Ward during the preseason, including a 33-yard catch-and-run connection. Tennessee rested Ward and most of its starters in the preseason finale against Chicago, indicating that the priority had shifted toward preparing them for New York.

Tennessee's biggest concern remains protection. Ward absorbed 55 sacks as a rookie, and New York has invested heavily in improving its ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks. If Tennessee cannot keep Ward upright, laying points with the Titans becomes difficult even at home.

The Jets added Bailey to their pass rush and Fitzpatrick to the secondary while bringing Smith back to stabilize the quarterback position. With Hall expected to play, New York has enough offensive balance to avoid putting everything on Smith. This is one of the lowest totals on the Week 1 board for a reason. Tennessee scored only 284 points last season while New York scored 300, and neither offense enters the opener with a proven high-scoring profile.
