Eagles Need More From Their Offense

Philadelphia's preseason opener was a difficult one offensively, as the Eagles lost 24-7 to the Baltimore Ravens. The Eagles were held scoreless through the first three quarters before finally reaching the end zone in the fourth. Philadelphia finished with only 159 total yards, consisting of 76 rushing yards and 83 net passing yards. The Eagles also failed to convert any of their nine third-down attempts and committed 10 penalties for 96 yards. Baltimore controlled possession for 41:17, leaving Philadelphia with only 18:43.

The Eagles rotated Andy Dalton, Tanner McKee and Cole Payton at quarterback. Dalton completed 3 of 6 passes for 20 yards, McKee finished 6 of 10 for 35 yards, and Payton completed 4 of 9 passes for 37 yards and one touchdown. Payton also provided Philadelphia with some production on the ground, rushing three times for 45 yards. Philadelphia's passing game struggled to create sustained offense regardless of which quarterback was on the field, making offensive execution an obvious area to watch against New England.

Philadelphia did create some positive moments defensively. The Eagles forced two Baltimore turnovers, recording an interception and recovering a fumble. However, Baltimore still accumulated 440 total yards and 31 first downs, including 298 net passing yards and 142 rushing yards. Philadelphia therefore made a few significant defensive plays but struggled to consistently get Baltimore's offense off the field. Combining that with an 0-for-9 third-down performance offensively explains why the Eagles were unable to seriously threaten in the second half.

Patriots Defense Creates Four Turnovers

New England opened its preseason with a 13-13 tie against the Indianapolis Colts at Gillette Stadium. The Patriots led 10-7 at halftime and 13-7 after three quarters before Indianapolis scored six unanswered points in the fourth. With preseason overtime no longer played, the game finished tied. New England therefore enters Week 2 still looking for its first preseason victory while playing its second consecutive game at home.

With Drake Maye not playing, Tommy DeVito completed 13 of 22 passes for 138 yards and one touchdown. Rookie Behren Morton also received playing time later in the game. Jam Miller rushed 14 times for 55 yards, giving New England its leading performance on the ground. The Patriots scored one touchdown and kicked two field goals, finishing with 13 points despite receiving several extra possessions from their defense.

The biggest positive for New England was unquestionably its ability to take the football away. The Patriots forced four Indianapolis turnovers, with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. New England nevertheless scored only 13 points, making its inability to fully capitalize on those takeaways a concern. The kicking game also contributed to the missed opportunities with three unsuccessful field-goal attempts. Still, generating four takeaways in the preseason opener gives New England's defense an encouraging foundation heading into its matchup with a Philadelphia offense that struggled badly in Week 1.

Philadelphia Eagles vs New England Patriots Picks and Prediction

Pick: New England Patriots +1.5

The pick is New England Patriots +1.5. Philadelphia's Week 1 offensive performance makes laying road points difficult to justify. The Eagles generated only 159 total yards, six first downs and no successful third-down conversions against Baltimore. New England wasn't particularly explosive offensively against Indianapolis, but the Patriots forced four turnovers and are playing their second consecutive game at Gillette Stadium. In what projects as another close, low-scoring preseason game, taking the home team plus the points is the preferred side.

Pick: Under 36.5

The total pick is Under 36.5. Philadelphia and Baltimore combined for only 31 points in Week 1, while New England and Indianapolis produced 26. More importantly, the Eagles scored only seven points and generated 159 yards, while the Patriots scored 13 despite forcing four turnovers. Neither offense demonstrated the consistency necessary to make the over appealing, while both defenses showed the ability to create disruptive plays. Unless the offenses take a substantial step forward, reaching the upper 30s could be difficult.

Prediction: New England Patriots 17, Philadelphia Eagles 13
