Ducks Usher in a New Era

It’s a new era for the Anaheim Ducks in 2025-26, as they opted to bring in a successful veteran head coach in Joel Quenneville. Coach Q was absent from the NHL for several seasons, last coaching a 2+ year stint with the Panthers (2019-2022) where he went 79-40-13. He famously coached the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cups in the 2010s, and the front office is hoping that Coach Quenneville can get this young core firing on all cylinders like he did with the Patrick Kane-Jonathan Toews youth back in the day.

The Ducks are looking to build on a season where they posted a mediocre 35-37-10 (80 points) record. That was good enough for sixth in the Pacific Division, meaning that Anaheim didn’t make the playoffs. The Ducks bring back key offensive leaders in C Mason McTavish (22 goals) and RW Troy Terry (54 assists). Longtime netminder John Gibson has departed, which means his understudy, Lukas Dostal (3.10 GAA, .903 SV%), will take over the goaltending responsibilities.

  • The Ducks enter the season with a point total of 84.5 (-105/-125), and they’re priced at +10000 to win the Stanley Cup.
  • Last season, Anaheim averaged 2.65 goals per game (30th) and cashed 11.8% of their power plays (32nd).
  • Defensively, they conceded 3.18 goals per contest (23rd) and ranked 29th on the penalty kill at 74.2%.

Kraken in Hockey Limbo

Meanwhile, the Seattle Kraken had that playoff run to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs back in 2022-23, but that feels like forever ago with the way the team has performed recently. They’ve missed the postseason in two years since then, forcing management to make a coaching change. Coach Lane Lambert will take the reins of the franchise moving forward. He was most recently with the Islanders for 1+ seasons, but was terminated in 2023-24 after posting a cumulative record of  61-46-20.

Coach Lambert inherits a club that went 35-41-6 (76 points) last season, placing seventh in the Pacific and 13th in the Western Conference. In terms of personnel, top goalscorer Jaden Schwartz (26G) returns, as does the leader in points, Jared McCann (22G, 39A). The Kraken have a few young, notable centermen in Matty Beniers (20G, 23A) and Shane Wright (19G, 25A), but they’ll need to elevate their performance to see their team to the playoffs. Joey Daccord (2.75 GAA, .906 SV%) returns in net.

  • Seattle has a point total of 77.5 (-120/-110) entering the campaign, and they’re currently a +20000 longshot to win the Stanley Cup.
  • The Kraken were mediocre offensively last season, putting up 2.99 goals per game (16th) and converting 18.9% of their power-play chances (23rd).
  • On the defensive side, Seattle was 24th in team GAA (3.20), while ranking 21st on the penalty kill (77.2%).

Ducks vs. Kraken Pick

Moneyline Pick for Ducks vs. Kraken

  • Anaheim Ducks Moneyline (+100) (5 units)

In my opinion, these franchises are trending in opposite directions. I love the move for Anaheim to bring in Coach Joel Quenneville, as he has been a winner at basically every stop. He inherits a solid young core featuring guys like C Leo Carlsson, RW Troy Terry, LW Cutter Gauthier, and C Mason McTavish, and the front office is also adding veteran goal scorers like LW Chris Kreider and RW Mikael Granlund.

Even before the additions of Kreider and Granlund, we saw the Ducks find a groove toward the end of last season, going a respectable 17-14-4 in their final 35 games. They have a solid goaltender in Lukas Dostal (.903 SV%), and with a new coach to refine the skills of the younger core, I think the sky is the limit for this club. I’ll gladly take an even-money flier on Anaheim in this spot.

Over/Under Pick for Ducks vs. Kraken

  • Under 5.5 Goals (+100) (5 units)

This total is floating around at 5.5 goals (-120/+100), and we may see a 6.0-goal total by puck drop. I wouldn’t mind the flat 6.0 to have the “push potential,” but I also think there’s some decent value here with the even-money payout of under 5.5 goals.

These were two of the worst offenses in the NHL last season. For Anaheim, they were 30th in scoring (2.65 GPG) and dead last on the power play (11.8%), while Seattle was 16th (2.99 GPG) and 23rd (18.9%) in those respective categories. In terms of expected goals per 60 minutes, the Ducks were 24th (2.90), while the Kraken were 26th (2.88). We have two capable netminders in this game in Lukas Dostal (3.10 GAA, .902 SV%) and Joey Daccord (2.75 GAA, .906 SV%) as well. Factor in that it’s the season opener, and it may be a slow start for the offenses, and I think it’s best to play the under in this divisional showdown.
