Ducks flying high
There is no team in hockey at hot as the Ducks right now, winners of five in a row and seven of their last eight games. Their offense has put up some big numbers, scoring seven goals on Thursday for the fourth time already this season.
Unsurprisingly, Anaheim leads the NHL in scoring, averaging 4.15 goals per game, behind 30.9 shots a night, fourth most in the league. Of the team’s 50 goals, 12 have been scored on the power play and three short-handed. Four players have at least five goals thus far for the club with Cutter Gauthier leading the group with 11, tied for the league lead. Over his last three games, the Ducks’ winger has five goals and three assists. He’s also sporting a +7 for his efforts. Chris Krieder has added 9 goals, five of them coming over his last four games. Leo Carlsson leads the team with 20 points, and his 14 assists are tied for fourth in the league.
On the defensive end, Anaheim is giving up 3.23 goals per game, 10th in the league. Opponents have gotten off an average of 29.8 shots per game against them, also 10th. They’ve are 75% on the penalty kill, allowing 11 goals in 44 short-handed chances. They are 17th in hits with 281 and 31st in blocked shots with 173. Lukas Dostal has been between the pipes for 11 of 13 games thus far. He’s 7-3-1 with a 2.81 goals against average and .904 save percentage. With back-to-back games this weekend, he should get the call here while Petr Mrazek goes on Sunday in Winnipeg.

Team notes
- Carlsson has notched at least one assist in each of his last seven games.
- Ross Johnston is tied for fourth in the league with 29 penalty minutes despite averaging only 9:10 TOI per game.
- Troy Terry has two assists in each of his last two games and is second on the team with 12 helpers.
- Center Mikael Granlund (+13) remains sidelined with a lowed body injury.
Golden Knights tasting too much
The Golden Knights were 5-0-2 before they were forced to taste a regulation loss and have since gone 2-3-1. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Tampa Bay on Thursday but were outscored 6-1 over the second and third periods.
The offense has slowed considerably for Vegas, and over the last three games, they compiled a total of six goals. Their 3.31 goals against average this season and they average 28.8 shots per game, both ranking 13th in the NHL. On the power play, the Knights scored 11 times at a 23.4% success rate. They’ve also scored a short-handed goal, courtesy of William Karlsson. Jack Eichel leads the team with 21 points and is second on the club with 8 goals. He broke a two-game pointless streak with two assists on Thursday. He has 13 helpers this season, tied with Mitch Marner for the team lead and tied for seventh in the league.
On the other end of the ice, the Golden Knights are allowing 2.85 goals per game, 10th best in the league. Opponents have averaged 25.6 shots per game against Vegas, scoring on 77.8% of their power play chances against them. The Knights are 21st in the league with 275 hits and their 224 blocked shots rank 12th. The team was splitting things up between Akria Schmid and Adin Hill before Hill got injured. Carl Lindblom got his third start of the season on Thursday so Akira Schmid should be the go-to guy here. This will be his eighth start and thus far the Vegas goalie is 6-1-0 with a 2.31 GAA and .908 save percentage.
Team notes
- Brayden McNabb leads the league with 45 blocked shots.
- Pavel Dorofeyev is second on the team with 9 goals but hasn’t scored in three straight games and has just two goals in his last six.
- Shea Theodore leads the team and is 15th in the league averaging 24:13 TOI per game.
- Jeremy Lauzon is tied for 12th in the NHL with 48 hits.
Ducks vs. Golden Knights Picks
Money Line Pick for Ducks vs. Golden Knights
- Anaheim +1.5 (-144) (5 units)
This is the first meeting between the division rivals. Last year, Vegas swept the four regular-season meetings between the two. Anaheim is a different beast coming into this matchup. The Ducks are rolling, winning their last five games by an average of 3.3 goals per game. Their last two losses have been by just a goal, so even if they are to lose their streak here, they’ll be in step with Vegas here. More concerning for the Golden Knights is their defense, which collapsed last time out, allowing 6 goals to Tampa Bay. Anaheim presents a much more forceful offense and Vegas is going to have its work cut out for them.
Take the Ducks with the puck line.
Spread Pick for Ducks vs. Golden Knights
- Under 6.5 (5 units)
While this matchup does feature the top-scoring offense in the game, it also has a pair of goaltenders who have been playing very well this season. Schmid picked up his first shutout of the season in his last start against Detroit on Tuesday, stopping 24 shots. The Vegas goalie has given up a combined seven goals in his last four starts. Dostal is coming off of his worst outing of the season, in which he gave up 5 goals. Prior to that, he allowed an average of just 2 goals per game over a four-game stretch. The under is 8-2 in the last ten meetings between these two and given it’s the first meeting of the season, I’m expecting it to be tight.
Take the under.
