Can the Bruins turn things around this season?
After a historic regular season, the Boston Bruins took a massive step back in 2024/25, with the team going just 33-39-10 as they finished in last place in the Eastern Conference, while also trading away some key franchise veterans in the process. The Bruins' lineup hasn't changed too much from last season, but with the team now getting a full off-season of Fraser Minten and getting their blue line healthy, this is a team that believes they can get back into the Wild Card race in 2025/26.
Last season, Boston's success was unsurprisingly led by David Pastrnak, who put together 43 goals and 106 points in 82 games played, and with Morgan Geekie the second leading scorer at 57, this is a team that needs someone to step up in the worst way. In net for the Bruins in this one will be veteran Jeremy Swayman, who wasn't himself last season as he posted just a .892 save percentage along with a 3.12 GAA, but with the talented star having a full off-season to bounce back from that, he could be a Vezina-caliber goaltender once more.

Can Washington repeat their success from 2024/25?
The Washington Capitals were buoyed by Alex Ovechkin's chase for history in 2024/25, and as a result, they shockingly took home the President's Trophy, all while tallying an impressive 25-13-3 record away from home. Unlike Boston, Washington has undergone plenty of change since last season, with rookie Ryan Leonard now set to take up a key top-nine role for this team, but with all their big stars returning, they believe they can repeat the success they experienced a year ago.
2024/25 was all about Ovechkin, with the long-time Capitals captain tallying 44 goals in just 65 games played, but it was Dylan Strome who led the team in scoring with 82 points in 82 games played as he set a career high in the NHL. In net, the Capitals will turn to superstar Logan Thompson, who posted a career best 2.49 GAA a season ago, and with a save percentage of .910, it's easy to see why Washington experienced the success they did in the regular season.
Boston Bruins vs. Washington Capitals pick
Moneyline pick for Bruins vs. Capitals
- Washington -1.5 (4 units)
Early in the season, there's always an opportunity for major upsets, but in this one, the Capitals are a heavy favorite on the back of a massive 2024/25 campaign, with advantages in net and all over the ice coming into this season opener.
In three games a season ago, the Capitals went 2-1 over the Bruins, with the overall scores being 8-8 in that time, but with so much talent all over the ice, expect Washington to win their home opener in 2025/26.
Over/under pick for Bruins vs. Capitals
- Under 6.5 (4 units)
The overall strength for both these teams is their goaltending, with the under sitting at 6-3-1 in their last 10 head-to-head encounters, with a total of just 16 combined goals scored in their three meetings a season ago.
Last season, the Bruins ranked 26th in the NHL in goals scored, and while the Capitals ranked top two, they allowed just 2.79 as a team, and with the goaltending set to thrive for both of them, expect this to be a low-scoring opener for both these teams.
Keep it simple, take the under.
