Flames stop the bleeding
This is the start of a four-game road trip for the Flames, who put an end to their eight-game winless streak on Sunday. Leading 3-1 heading into the third, Blake Coleman scored twice, including a short-hander, to allow Calgary to pull away. With three goals in the last two games, Coleman leads the team with five goals. Nazem Kadri leads the team with seven points but has only two assists over his last four games. The Flames are dead last in the NHL, averaging just two goals per game and their 27.8 shots per game average ranks 18th overall. On the power play, they’ve managed to score five times, and they have one short-handed goal.
Calgary’s defense is giving up 3.50 goals per game, the eighth-worst mark in the league. Opponents are averaging 29.7 shots per game against them, 13th overall. They are fifth in the league with 237 hits and 17th with 139 blocked shots. On the penalty kill, the Flames have allowed 10 goals in 40 times short-handed. MacKenzie Weegar has two assists while averaging a team-high 24:42 TOI per game, while fellow blue liner Rasmus Andersson has picked up two goals in 23:29 TOI per game. Dustin Wolf started in nine of 11 games in the crease, posting a 3.37 goals against average while going 2-6-1 with an .886 save percentage. The team has been hesitant to use backup Devin Cooley and with the off day between games, we should expect Wolf once again.

Maple Leafs need defense to step up
Mired in a three-game slump, the Maple Leafs were able to get back on track with their win on Saturday. They trailed three times in their game against Buffalo over the weekend before Dakota Joshua’s second goal of the season sent the game to overtime and John Tavares’ fifth goal won it. Tavares added an assist in the win, his third in as many games and his seventh of the season. Auston Matthews also has five goals, and William Nylander leads the team with 11 assists, tied for second most in the league. Toronto’s offense is averaging 3.44 goals per game, eighth in the NHL, with 28.2 shots a night, 17th overall. With the extra man, they have only three goals, tied for second-fewest on the power play.

They’ve gotten physical with 224 hits, seventh overall, and players have gotten in front of 138 shots, 18th in the blocks. Down a man, the team has given up five goals in 25 short-handed bids. Matthews is the team leader with 22:16 TOI per game, and blue liner Morgan Reilly has logged 21:50 per game, contributing two goals and four assists. Anthony Stolarz is 2-4-1 with a 3.31 GAA and .885 save percentage in seven games between the pipes.

- Matthews has won 60.3% of the 161 faceoffs taken.
- Nylander missed Saturday’s game with a lower-body injury and is listed as day-to-day.
Flames vs. Maple Leafs Picks
Money Line Pick for Flames vs. Maple Leafs
- Calgary +1.5 (-150) (4 units)
Toronto won both meetings against the Flames last season. The Leafs' defense is their greatest weakness right now, and that is not an overnight fix. They’ve proven, once again, that scoring won’t be an issue for this bunch, but if they can’t keep the opponent off the board, they’re in real trouble. The Flames' offense was struggling in a major way, but they seem to have corrected course with eight goals in their last two games. Their defense has been shaky at times and goaltending has not been strong either for Calgary, so their best path in this matchup is to try and keep up on the offensive end with Toronto. The Maple Leafs have won eight of the last ten games between these two teams, but five of those were by only one goal. Calgary has had three of their last five games go to overtime.
Take the Flames with the puck line.
Over/Under Pick for Flames vs. Maple Leafs
- Over 5.5 (5 units)
In two games last season, these two teams combined to average 8.5 goals per game. While this matchup does feature the lowest scoring offense in the league, it also features two of the most porous defenses in the land. Calgary has allowed four or more goals in six games this season. Toronto has given up at least three goals seven times this season, and they’ve scored three or more in three of their last four. The Flames went on a run of four straight games with just one goa,l but have since scored eight goals in two games. The over is 7-3 in the last ten games between the Flames and Leafs, and 12-5-2 between the two teams this season.
