Flamesβ Injury May Cause Issues
The Flames are coming off a season in which they fell short of the wild card at the end of the season and missed the playoffs. The Flames will be looking for that small improvement in their game to push into a wild-card spot this season.
Calgary has a young team and has relied on that youth moving forward as they sit in a small rebuild. However, with one of their key players, left-winger Jonathan Huberdeau, sitting out due to an undisclosed injury, the Flames are going to miss a huge piece of their offense and will need to rely more on the young, fast core than ever. Huberdeau was second on the team last season in goals, totalling 28 in his 81 games played, but the Flames were 29th overall in goals scored. When you take away one of the top goal scorers on your team, it may lead to a lack of offensive output and more losses than this young core can handle.

We will likely see Devin Cooley get the start in net for the Flames, as we saw Dustin Wolf get the start in net yesterday against the Oilers.
Devin Cooley:
- played six games in the 2023-2024 season with the Sharks and had a record of 2-3-1 with a save percentage of .870 and a goals against average of 4.98.
Injuries:
- Huberdeau LW Out - Undisclosed
- Pospisil C Out - Undisclosed
Canucks Secure Key Players
The Canucks, much like the Flames, ended their season missing the postseason and were unable to reach the wild card toward the end of the season. Vancouver will be looking to kick off their season on a high note as it hosts the Flames for their home opener on Thursday.
We saw some important signings during the offseason for the Canucks, but none more important than right-winger Brock Boeser and goaltender Thatcher Demko. Boeser finished second on the team last season in goals scored, scoring a total of 25 goals in his 75 games played. Demko was also an important signing as the Canucks traded away goaltender Arturs Silovs to the Penguins. We should expect a better season out of Demko than last year as Demko only played 23 games due to an injury and posted a 10-8-3 record with a save percentage of .889. To bolster their offense, the Canucks signed left-winger Evander Kane who should add a good amount of grit to the team they have been lacking.
We will likely see Thatcher Demko take the net for the Canucks on Thursday for their home opener against the Flames.
Thatcher Demko:
- had a record of 10-8-3 in 23 games with a goals against average of 2.90 and a save percentage of .889 in 2024-25.
- has a record of 7-5-3 in 15 games with a goals against average of 2.87 and a save percentage of .910 versus the Flames in his career.
Injuries:
- Blueger C Day To Day - Undisclosed
- Joseph D Out - Undisclosed
- Brisebois D Out - Lower-body
- Woo D Out - Upper-body
- Hoglander LW Out - Ankle
Flames vs. Canucks Picks and Predictions
Puck Line Pick for Flames versus Canucks
- Canucks -1.5 (+118) (4 units)Β
The Canucks have an 8-2 record against the puck line in their last 10 games against the Flames at home. The Flames will be playing back-to-back games after their game yesterday against the Oilers. We should expect the defense for the Flames to be fatigued in this game but more importantly, we should see a huge shift in the quality of net. We are seeing a goaltender start for Calgary who has not played since the 2023-2024 season and is the third-string goaltender for the Flames. The Canucks should have no issue generating goals against the Flames; however, I believe Calgary will have difficulties finding any success on offense against Vancouver. Goaltender Thatcher Demko has a record of 5-2-2 in 9 games with a goals against average of 2.63 and a save percentage of .922 versus the Flames at home in his career. We should see a one-sided game with the Canucks dominating in their home opener.
Over/Under Pick for Flames vs. Canucks
- Under 5.5 (+102) (4 units)Β
The Canucks have an over/under record of 1-3-1 in their last five games versus the Flames at home. Calgary has struggled to generate offense last season, and this is evident by their ranking 29th in scoring. With the loss of their second-highest goal scorer, Jonathan Huberdeau, I have my doubts about how much offense the Flames can generate on a back-to-back and going up against a goaltender who seems to thrive against them at home. While the Canucks will find success in scoring, it will not be enough to carry the total by themselves.
