The Carolina Hurricanes visit the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night at Ball Arena, with the opening faceoff at 9:00 PM ET on ESPN+. Carolina enters the matchup at 5-1-0 and 3-1-0 on the road, while Colorado sits at 5-0-2 and 2-0-1 at home. Both teams have looked strong in the early going, with the Hurricanes averaging 4.00 goals per game and the Avalanche close behind at 3.43. Net the value: NHL predictions for the Carolina Hurricanes at the Colorado Avalanche with trends that matter.

Carolina Picks Up First Loss Of The Season

Carolina’s first six games have showcased a well-balanced attack, averaging 35.7 shots per game while limiting opponents to just 23.3. Seth Jarvis leads the team with nine points on six goals and three assists, and Martin Necas is a close second with 11 points, including six assists and a +9 rating. Sebastian Aho has been reliable as both a setup man and scorer, also with six assists. On special teams, the Hurricanes’ power play sits at just 9.5 percent, while the penalty kill has excelled at 89.5 percent, one of the strongest marks in the league.

Defensively, Carolina continues to frustrate opponents through tight zone coverage. They have allowed only 2.50 goals per game, largely due to keeping the front of the goal open and strong goaltending. Frederik Andersen has gone 3-1-0 with a 2.46 goals-against average and a .894 save percentage, while Brandon Bussi has impressed with a 1.97 GAA and .911 save mark in two starts. The Hurricanes’ defense, even while short-handed, has remained tough to beat, which has been a big part of the early-season success.

Carolina’s last outing was a 4-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, marking the first defeat of the season. Aho scored the lone goal early in the second period, but Vegas regained control with a pair of goals from Ivan Barbashev and William Karlsson. Despite outshooting Vegas early, Carolina struggled to generate chances after the opening period. Andersen made 21 saves, but the Golden Knights capitalized on turnovers and special-teams opportunities to pull away in the third.

Injuries are starting to test the Hurricanes. Defensemen Shayne Gostisbehere and Jaccob Slavin are both out until October 28, and goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov remains on injured reserve until October 25.

Avalanche Continue Point Streak Despite OT Loss

Colorado has been one of the NHL’s most consistent teams through seven games, earning at least one point in every contest. The Avalanche average 3.43 goals per game while giving up only 1.86, backed by a balanced offense and strong defensive play. Nathan MacKinnon leads with six goals and 33 shots. Martin Necas has 11 points, while Cale Makar’s puck-moving ability remains crucial to Colorado’s transition game. The Avalanche power play is at 11.5 percent, and the penalty kill has held firm at 83.3 percent.

In goal, Scott Wedgewood has been a force, posting a 5-0-2 record with a 1.84 GAA and a .927 save percentage. Colorado’s defense has been just as tough to beat, allowing 25.4 shots per game and maintaining the ice clear in front of Wedgewood. At home, the Avalanche have dominated, outscoring opponents 8-4 through three games and holding opponents to limited scoring chances. The team’s puck possession and defensive coverage have helped them remain one of the league’s toughest teams to play against in any situation.

In the most recent game, Colorado fell 4-3 in overtime to the Utah Mammoth. The Avalanche trailed 3-2 before Martin Necas tied it late in regulation with a sharp-angle goal off the goaltender’s mask. Cale Makar and Jack Drury also scored, while Wedgewood turned away 29 shots. Despite the loss, the Avalanche extended their season-opening point streak to seven games, showing toughness in another tightly contested road game.

Colorado’s injury list is lengthy. Samuel Girard (IR, Oct. 25) and Ronnie Attard (IR, Oct. 26) are both out on defense, while forwards Logan O’Connor and Joel Kiviranta remain sidelined into early November. Backup goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood is also out until October 26.

Carolina Hurricanes at Colorado Avalanche Pick

Spread Pick for Hurricanes vs. Avalanche

  •  Colorado Avalanche -1.5 (4 Units)

Colorado has not lost in regulation this season and carries a defensive edge that matches well against Carolina’s approach to shooting. With Wedgewood maintaining a .927 save percentage and the Avalanche allowing fewer than two goals per game, the home side will control tempo. Carolina’s missing defensemen weaken the transition game, and the Avalanche’s home record suggests they can pull away in the third period. The combination of balanced scoring and excellent goaltending makes Colorado a strong play on the puck line.

Over/Under Pick for Hurricanes vs. Avalanche

  •  Under 6.5 (5 Units)

Both teams feature disciplined defense and strong goaltending. Carolina’s penalty kill (89.5 percent) and Colorado’s goals-against average (1.86) point toward a tight, low-scoring matchup. The Hurricanes have averaged just 5.0 total goals across the last three games, while Colorado’s recent contests have hovered near 5.3. With both clubs limiting opponents’ shots effectively — under 26 against per game — and key offensive players missing due to injury, this game will be a controlled, defensive contest likely ending below the total.
