Use Code SSWC We have afternoon action on the slate in the NHL, so be sure to check in early with our Avalanche vs. Bruins predictions before the 3:30 EST opening faceoff from TD Garden. Colorado (5-0-3, 13 pts.) fell to Carolina in a shootout on Thursday night, 5-4. Boston (3-6-0, 6 pts.) dropped a shootout at home against Anaheim on Thursday, 7-5. With 13 games on the league schedule, remember that nobody does it better when it comes to NHL picks!
Avalanche hit speedbump
The Avalanche are one of two teams who have yet to lose in regulation and their 13 points were the most in the league before Friday night’s action. Despite that, they’ve dropped their last two games, including a Tuesday defeat in overtime. They trailed 4-1 against Carolina on Thursday but were able to force overtime with a late charge before falling in the shootout.
The Colorado offense has found the back of the net 28 times through eight games, and its 3.5 goals per game average is tied for seventh in the league. They lead the league with 35.1 shots per game and have won 52.5% of their faceoffs. The Avalanche have struggled on the power play, scoring just four goals in 34 chances. Martin Necas leads the team with six goals and six assists. The center has scored on 31.6% of his shots. Nathan MacKinnon has matched Necas with six goals and leads the league with 37 shots.
Defensively, the Avalanche ranks second in the NHL, allowing just 2.13 goals per game. The 26.1 shots per game allowed are tied for eighth eighth-fewest in the league. On the penalty kill, they’ve allowed just three goals in 23 short-handed runs. Cole Makar leads the team with 24:50 of ice time each gam,e and the defenseman has recorded three goals and six assists. Devon Toews is averaging 23:11 TOI but has yet to notch a point. The team used Trent Miner in net for the first time on Thursday, so Scott Wedgewood should be back between the pipes in this game. The Colorado goalie is 5-0-2 with a 2.33 GAA and .910 save percentage.

Team notes
- No one in the league has taken more than MacKinnon’s 174 faceoffs, of which he’s won 54%.
- Necas has picked up at least one point in all eight games this season.
- Have scored 11 third-period goals this season.
Bruins already in hibernation
The updated version of the Bruins got off on the right foot, winning their first three games under new head coach Marco Sturm. Unfortunately, they haven’t won since as they’ve fallen in regulation in six straight games. Their high-scoring tilt versus Anaheim on Thursday was even going into the third, before they got outscored, 4-2 over the final 12 minutes.
With their five-goal effort against the Ducks, the Bruins boosted their goal per game average to 3.22, 12th overall. They are 17th in the league with 28.4 shots per game, and they’ve won 56.1% of their faceoffs, second best in the NHL. The B’s are 21.9% on the power play, scoring seven goals in 32 chances. David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie each notched their team-best fifth goals on Thursday. Pastrnak leads the team with 12 points and is second in the league with 36 shots. Paval Zacha has matched Pastrnak’s efforts with seven assists.
Boston’s defense is giving up 3.67 goals per game, the fifth most in the NHL. Opponents are averaging 28.9 shots against them, 15th overall. The Bruins are 86.1% on the penalty kill, having allowed five goals in 36 chances. Charlie McAvoy is putting in 24:29 TOI each night, a team high, and he has six assists. Nikita Zadrov averages 21:24 TOI, leads the league with 40 hits and is tied for ninth with 20 blocked shots. Joonas Korpisalo started Thursday’s shootout, so the nod should go to Jeremy Swayman here. He’s 2-3 with a 3.02 GAA and .903 save percentage in five games.
Team notes
- Elias Lindholm has won 61.1% of the 162 faceoffs he has taken.
- Andrew Peeke is tied for third in the league with 23 blocked shots.
- Tied for the league lead with 45 takeaways.
Avalanche vs. Bruins Picks
Money Line Pick for Avalanche vs. Bruins
- Colorado -1.5 (+134) (5 units)
These two met exactly a week ago in Colorado, a game the Avalanche won by three goals. The Bruins' defense has been allowing the opposition to roll them of late, and in their current losing streak, they’ve given up at least four goals, five times. Colorado has a top third offense in terms of scoring, and no one is getting more scoring opportunities per game than they are. Their defense has done well to limit the opposition’s shots, and Wedgewood continues to be a sturdy presence in the crease. Boston is very much in a tailspin, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be able to get out of it easily. Four of Colorado’s five wins this season have been by at least two goals, so grab some value with this one.
Take the Avalanche with the puck line.
Over/Under Pick for Avalanche vs. Bruins
- Under 5.5 (4 units)
When these two met a week ago, they combined for five goals and hit the under. This matchup is a tale of two teams heading in different directions. Colorado already has the playbook to stop the Bruins, having held them to just one goal and 14 shots last weekend. That, plus the weight of their current losing streak, leads me to think that Boston will again be limited in their scoring. The Avalanche have scored no more than four goals in any gam,e and if they are going to carry the bulk of the load, they’ll need to do more than that. The under hit in the last two games between these teams.
Take the under.
