Avalanche versus Kings Picks and Predictions - Tuesday, October 7th

The Avalanche are traveling to Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, for their game against the Kings; keep reading for our Avalanche versus Kings prediction. Colorado finished third in the Central last season with a record of 49-29-4. Los Angeles ended their season second in the Pacific with a record of 48-25-9. The Kings had a 1-2-0 record against the Avalanche in 2024-25. The puck drop is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. EDT. Nobody does it better when it comes to NHL picks!

Avalanche Look To Continue Success From Last Year

The Avalanche are returning after a disappointing season last year as they were knocked out in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Stars in a 3-4 series loss. The Avalanche were desperate to go far in the playoffs as their core looks stable and has a lot of potential. Colorado, during their offseason, re-signed center Brock Nelson and signed defenseman Brent Burns. Nelson adds depth to their forwards and Burns helps out an already elite defensive core led by star player Cale Makar.

Colorado suffered from inconsistent goaltending last season; however, they were able to stabilize late in the season with the addition of Mackenzie Blackwood to their lineup. The goaltending was an issue because the defense for Colorado is one of the better ones in the league, which allows the third fewest shots on goal. Despite the lack of shots they would face, the goaltending earlier in the season struggled to save the few shots needed to generate wins. Due to this, the Avalanche have relied heavily on their offense to counterbalance their struggling goaltending, but with more reliable goaltending this season, we should expect the Avalanche to grab more wins than last season.

We will likely see goaltender Scott Wedgewood get the start in net for the Avalanche on Tuesday.

Scott Wedgewood:

  • was 14-6-2 in 24 games with a goals against average of 2.32 and a save percentage of .908 in 2024-25.
  • has a record of 5-2-0 in 7 games with a goals against average of 2.15 and a save percentage of .930 versus the Kings in his career.

Injuries:

  • Blackwood G Out - Lower-body
  • Girard D Out - Lower-body
  • O'Connor RW Out - Hip

Kings Look To Generate More Offense

The Kings are returning after a lackluster end to their season as they fell in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs to the Oilers in a 4-2 series loss. Los Angeles will be looking to build off of their season last year as new GM Ken Holland looks to fill in the gaps on defense, which were lost in the offseason. With the additions of defensemen Cody Ceci and Brian Dumoulin, they will aim to fill in the missing spots of Valdislav Gavrikov and Jordan Spence on the blue line.

Last season, the blue line was key to the success of the Kings, sitting as the second-best team in the league in shots allowed per game at 25.5. This, in combination with their reliable goaltending, put the Kings as one of the more elite defensive teams last season, with a save percentage sitting fifth in the league at .903. Los Angeles will need to improve on their offense, however, which ranked only 14th in scoring last season and 27th on the power play at 17.9%. This lack of offense is what kept them from moving far in the postseason and it will need to be a focus going into this season.

We will likely see goaltender Darcy Kuemper get the start in net for the Kings on Tuesday.

Darcy Kuemper:

  • had a record of 31-11-7 in 50 games with a goals against average of 2.02 and a save percentage of .921 in 2024-25.
  • has a record of 5-3-2 in 13 games with a goals against average of 2.41 and a save percentage of .909 versus the Avalanche in his career.

Injuries:

  • Burroughs D Day To Day - Upper Body
  • Booth D Out - Lower-body
  • Perry RW Out - Knee

Avalanche vs. Kings Picks and Predictions

Money Line Pick for Avalanche vs. Kings

  • Kings Money Line (-115) (5 units)

The Kings were 23-5-4 as favorites at home in 2024-25. The Avalanche had a 1-5-0 record as underdogs against the Western Conference on the road in 2024-25. Darcy Kuemper is 4-1-0 in 5 games with a goals against average of 1.80 and a save percentage of .929 against the Avalanche at home in his career. Both teams are coming off seasons in which they lost the first round of the playoffs and will be looking to start their season off on a better note. This looks like a close competitive game between two contending defensive teams, but I have to give it to the Kings as they have more reliability in their goaltending than the Avalanche does, leaning on their backup goaltender.

Over/Under Pick for Avalanche vs. Kings

  • Under 5.5 (-105) ( 4 units)

The Kings had an over/under record of 14-20-1 as favorites at home in 2024-25. Both teams were at the top of the league last season in shots allowed on net and as a result, we should expect very little from both offenses in this game. Scott Wedgewood has a record of 2-1-0 in 3 games with a goals against average of 2.34 and a save percentage of .926 against the Kings on the road in his career. With both goaltenders thriving against the other team, we should see neither offense generating much to start their season and see a lower scoring competitive affair.
