Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Calgary Flames prediction

In a non-conference affair north of the border on Wednesday night, the Calgary Flames host the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Flames (3-9-2) are coming off a win in their last game, but still have the fewest points in the NHL, and the Blue Jackets (7-5-0) had their four-game win streak snapped in their last game. Attack Cools Down for Blue Jackets in Loss

The Blue Jackets had totaled 18 goals in three games before their offense cooled down in a 3-2 road loss to the New York Islanders in their last game. They had a 2-1 lead with only 1:07 remaining, but gave up two quick goals. Miles Wood and Denton Mateychuk each lit the lamp in the loss and Elvis Merzlikins (4-2-0 2.98 GAA) gave up three goals on 39 shots. Merzlikins has given up three goals in each of his last two starts, and Jet Greaves (3-3-0 2.68 GAA) may get the nod to face the Flames and he has given up more than three goals in only one of his six starts this season.

Columbus is averaging 3.25 goals per game and ranks tied for 15th, giving up an average of 3.00 goals per game. Kirill Marchenko is the team leader in points with 12 (7 goals 5 assists) and while he has not scored a goal in the last seven games, he has an assist in each of the last five games. Dmitri Voronkov and Zach Werenski each have 10 points and have combined for nine goals and 11 assists. On the season, Columbus is 4-2-0 on the road, and this is their first game of the season facing the Flames.

Not Four this Time Around for Flames

The Flames had given up four goals in losing three in a row before their last game, playing better defense in a 2-1 road win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Jonathan Huberdeau netted both goals with assists from Joel Hanley and MacKenzie Weegar and Dustin Wolf (3-9-1 3.39 GAA) stopped 17 of 18 shots after giving up a total of seven goals in his previous two starts. Backup Devin Cooley (0-1-1 1.98 GAA) may get the call to face the Blue Jackets and two of his last three appearances have been in relief, where he only gave up a total of one goal.

Calgary ranks dead last in the NHL, averaging 2.14 goals per game, and ranks 24th, giving up an average of 3.36 goals per game. The less-than-stellar Flames attack only has one player with over seven points in Nazem Kadri, with 10 points (3 goals 7 assists), who has two goals and three assists over the last five games. Blake Coleman leads the club with five goals and has not lit the lamp in the last four games. On the season, the Flames are 1-3-1 at home, and while they were beaten badly by Columbus on the road last season, they did beat them at home.

Blue Jackets vs. Flames Pick

Money Line pick for Blue Jackets vs. Flames

  • Blue Jackets (+4 Units)

The Blue Jackets had won three in a row before a loss in their last game, while the Flames are coming off a win after losing three in a row. It is not a surprise that Calgary has the fewest points in the league, as they rank last in the NHL in scoring and only 24th in goals against per game. Columbus is pretty balanced, and they took the loss, only scoring two goals in their last game. When it comes to the Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Calgary Flames prediction, the Jackets will regroup on the attack and their D will get it done, facing a tepid Calgary attack, and they are the pick to win this game.,

Over/Under Pick for Blue Jackets vs. Flames

  • Under (+4 Units)

I am leaning towards the Under in this game, and that was the winning pick in each of the last two games between these teams. The Flames are the lowest-scoring team in the league, and they won the last game even after only scoring two goals. They have struggled on both sides of the ice, and their less-than-stellar attack will not do much in this game. While Columbus has a legit attack, that was not the case in the last game only scored two goals. They will better that in this game, but not by much, and add to the scoring woes for the Flames, and you get the Under for this non-conference game.
